Hi. I've been using PI for a number of years now, started out with the 4.x version that came with my Dell PC (never had any problems with that) and since I have no desire to constantly purchase the lastest releases, am running PI 8 since a few weeks (installed from original CD).
There's not a single session in which I won't be shut down "Windows has encountered a problem and the application will shut down .. blah blah"
I have checked reviews of PI software and found an abundance of users complaining that PI is very unstable on the XP platform (be it a PI or Windows fault, I don't know). I know this subject has been raised a number of times in these forums but maybe a quick recap from a moderator would be good, maybe with a few hints what could be done?
My system: Dell Dimension 4500S, P4 @ 1.8 Ghz, 1 GB Mem, 40 GB HD (>60% free space left and well maintained), on-board graphics.
Thanks guys!
So what's the deal with PI and Windows XP?

I run some pretty intense grahics programs on three different XP sysems with three different video boards and haven't had very many problems at all (none with PI11 stability.) The only problem I've encuntered is with "Smart Download", but that's a whole different thing.
All of my systems have a minimum of 512 MB of memory and two are AMD's and one Intel notebook.

I also run PI XL, 10 and 11 on an XP Pro SP2 laptop and an XP Pro SP2 desk top PC without any problems of the kind you mentioned. That is not to say that there are many users here, complaining about that very problem.
I would tend to think that these are rather system specific and may be caused by certain hardware/software configurations. Unfortunately, we have not been able so far, to determine what these factors are. A large part of this shortcoming is due to users with these problems not providing enough detail of their particular setups.
Some time back, I had such an error also. It went away after I did a clean install of Windows and PI. Have you tried this? It's very important to disable any virus scanning software programs and fire walls prior to installing PI.
