Shouldn't I be able to edit audio and add cues?

Shouldn't I be able to edit audio and add cues in the preview window? The audio plays, but the wave form does not show up. I can add cues in the source window, but then I have to manually add cues to the video timeline. What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to automate this process?
