Can anyone explain?

Trying to burn a dvd from mpeg2 tv capture. Original tv capture is 3.3gig. All I did was reduce the length by cutting out unwanted sections (now less than half the original file length). I then rendered using "same as project settings" Yet the rendered file is now bigger than the original?

There are a number of things that could cause this. One that comes to mind is the specifications of the original capture and the specification of the rendered project. Since you did not include those details that is where I would start. Can you give us the properties of both MPEG files?

Specifically, check the bitrate of each file. Higher bitrate = bigger file = better quality*. Or, it could be a different audio format, or a different pixel resolution.

I thought that Same As Project Settings meant same as source file... but maybe the Project Settings don't automatically default to the source's settings.

And, MPEGs are not meant to be edited. You can get all sorts of problems... degraded video quality, A/V sync problems, corrupt files that crash Ulead programs, etc. If you have a choice, capture to AVI/DV. Assuming you're making a DVD, it's generally best to encode to MPEG-2 once, as the last step before burning.

* Of course re-coding to a higher bitrate isn't going to improve the quality... In fact, the extra decode/re-code cycle will probably degrade the video!

Sorry for the rushed post with no detail. I use VS9:

Have checked the Mpeg 2 settings from the raw TV capture(can't capture TV any other way) and the rendered file (after only removing unwanted sections not really editing).

Both are identical except original capture claims VBR (Max 15000)kbps? where rendered "same as project settings " states VBR (max 6000)kbps.

settings are upper field first
544x576
Mpeg audio layer 2 bit rate 128kbps.

Could it be to do with the codec used by VS9? Just a guess as I know nothing about codecs.

Thanks

Hi Andy

Your capture settings seem to be at fault.
The bit rate of 15000 is very high, do you mean 1500.
The frame size of 555 x 576 is strange???????

If you are capturing to Mpeg 2 format select DVD from the format box NOT Mpeg.

(After capture or render a thumbnail of the file is placed in the library, right click select properties to view the video clip settings)

If you do not have the DVD option and have to use Mpeg---customize your settings to:-
(select the Options cogwheel then Video/ Audio capture Settings / Advanced)
A bit rate of 4000 is suitable for vhs / tv capture. And will allow at least 2 hours of footage to a dvd.

MPEG Files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25.00 fps
Upper Field First
MPEG-2
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 4000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 192 kbps
MPEG Audio, 44.1 KHz, Stereo

Selecting DVD as the format customize the settings to:-

MPEG Files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25.00 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: 4000 kbps
Audio data rate: 192 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48.0 KHz, Stereo

When you Share Create Video File, select either Project Settings or First Clip, check the settings in the properties box before proceeding.

Hope this Helps

Trevor
