Perform Non-Square Pixel Rendering

Post by dstringh »

I must have missed the definition of this in the manual. I have been told variously to always use this, as well as to never use this. What is it? What does it do?: When should it be used?

Thanks! And Happy New Year to all!

If you are rendering to standard 4.3 format then use square pixel rendering.

If you are rendering to 16.9 format use non square pixel rendering.

Don't you mean the reverse of that?

Actually neither one is a square pixel. Both 4:3 and 16:9 both use non-square pixels. Get out your calculators and you will see that neither 720x480, nor 720x576 come out to 4:3 or 16:9, but those are the dimentions used for both formats.

I have always wondered about square pixel reference because stills use square pixels, but video does not.

I am watching this just to see if I can get a good explanation too.

This is how I change from 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratio using VS9.
The video must be true 16:9 to start with.

When I import a 16:9 aspect ratio from a sony recorder the import
module assigns it as 4:3. So does MF4 and Nero. Probably a bug in my sony dvd recorder (don't know). The Aspect Ratio is definitely 16:9 widescreen recorded on a Canon DV unit transferred via DV firewire into the Sony unit recording in -VR mode.
If played back on a dvd player, software or hardware the dvd plays the correct aspect ratio.

Using the importing feature of VS9 the video is assigned 4:3 Aspect Ratio.
To correct this I goto Share -> Create Video file -> Custom settings -> Options and set the Video & Audio Properties to match the source EXCEPT for the aspect ratio which I change to 16:9.

On the first tab of the custom settings I "Uncheck" "Perform non-square pixel rendering" and leave "Perform SmartRender" Checked "On".

After the file is rendered I import it etc or MF it for dvd.

The down side of this is I have to smart render the file but a 2.2 gig file to convert to 16:9 takes about 3 minutes.
It does put it back to 16:9.

If I go direct DV into VS9 it records to aspect ratio correctly.
But, since I don't plan to edit much it's faster to DV into the recorder.
