I bought one of the DirecTV TiVo units that was modified to put the TiVo video out of the USB jack, and make it accessible on my home computer network. It...well, KIND of worked. However, I found it was far more trouble to make a file and burn a DVD in my favorite application (guess who?)
So here's what I have done:
Connect my Sony Digital8 camcorder (with FireWire and analog pass-thru conversion) to the video and audio out of my TiVo, and my computer.
Capture the video from the camcorder, as the video plays back, with WinDV, to the hard drive as an AVI file. (This is far better than using capture cards, since none of them that I have ever seen keeps audio and video in sync. On a FireWire conversion it always does.)
Edit the video in Ulead, using the editing procedure in the Sticky note of this forum.
Save the file as MPEG's to DVD disks (as data), erase the AVI and MPEG files, and capture/edit/convert again.
When I get all episodes I want, pull the videos off the DVD data storage disks onto the hard drive and burn to video DVD through Ulead.
The only problem seems to be that the Line 21 closed-captioning information is lost. I like keeping captions, but don't know how to do it precisely. Some help with that (but not enough) was found here....

Tivo to MPG Conversion Utility Program
This free utility will strip the TIVO proprietary coding from the file and convert it very quickly to a regular mpg file. It can also do this in place, deleting the original file in the process. It is called DirecShow Dump.
It will process a 4gb Tivo file in about 3 minutes. Not bad.
Here is the site address from which to download it: http://prish.com/etivo/tbr.htm
Oh, it's freeware.

Re: Tivo to MPG Conversion Utility Program
I tried this program, but it didn't work for me all the time. Most of the time it would error out and the only way I could get it to even try was when it was copying from the Tivo to the computer. After it errored out, I couldn't get it to try again.
I've tried everything else suggested here and I can't get my sync problem fixed. The audio is about five minutes a head of the video. Even when I save it to harddrive first.

I second this program. Never had a problem and always great results. I use to extract clips from the local news for stories done on our fire department. I can then add the clips to my videos.
