Can Express burn .wmv to DVD+R DL?

Post by Phlosso4 »

Howdy folks! I truly appreciate the help this forum has been in deciding what product will best suit my business needs. Responses are prompt and courteous and very helpful!

That being said I have one more question I haven't been able to figure out by looking through the posts or manuals. Can Workshop Express burn .wmv files captured from Windows MovieMaker onto a Verbatim 8.5 DVD+R DL that will then play on any standard run-of-the-mill DVD player?

Devil said that for Workshop 2 you need to download extras essential to burning DLs. Are these extras also available for the Express version?

Thanks for all the help!!!

You could burn wmv files onto a DL blank as data files, but not authored, unchanged, with WS2, you would need DVD Disk Creator for that BUT you would not be able to play them in a DVD player. For that, you would have to encode them as MPEG-2, which is the DVD standard pre-format used by all DVD video players. WS2, all versions, would do the encoding but I'm not sure how well the encoder would work with a wmv file as input: I suspect you may have severe quality and encode time problems, because wmv files are already severely compressed with a different compression scheme to MPEG.

I believe the DL updates work for all Ulead authoring software.

I don't have a DL burner yet, but using Express, several times I have created "DVDs" on my hard drive that are too big to fit on a single-layer DVD.

Here's something you can try with the trial version:

When you get to the Burn Project To Disc screen, unckeck Burn to Disc, and check Create DVD Folders.

When that's done, use your regular DVD burning software (whatever came with your burner, etc) to copy the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders from your hard drive to the DVD.

DVD Workshop should easily be able to make a standard (MPEG-2) DVD from your WMV files. But, Devil is right. There will be always be some quality loss when going from one lossy format to another. The results may be acceptable, depending on how picky you are, how good your TV is, the bitrate of the WMV and MPG formats. etc., etc., etc. You may not have a choice, but if you end-up with "blocky" video (or other video-quality problems), just be aware that it may not be due to a problem with Workshop.

Also, given the number of different video formats and the variations of each format, Ulead sometimes has problems with video files. You'll have to experiment to make sure it can handle your particular WMV files.

Excellent! I'm going to try all of this tonight, seeing as how I have to have them all done by Monday, and there's more than 30GB of files. Bleh! I must say again that this forum is a great idea. It reminds me of my old alma mater St. John's, i.e. a group of intellectuals forming a community of free thought and idea exchange through the power of the dialectic. Being at the bottom of the knowledge totem pole in these matters however I am more of a parasite than a free contributing intellectual, but you guys (and gals) are awesome in my book. Keep up the good work!!!
