The 'modname' file is in fact the FFDSHOW DirectShow decoding filter for decompressing several video formats, including DivX, XviD, WMV, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 movies. It is an open source file, and would have had to have been loaded either specifically by you or by some other (earlier?) video software package. As far as I know, it is not part of VS9, either in the trial or full version. I certainly don't have it on my computer, and my full version of VS9 (and all other video editing software I have on my computer -- and I have a fair amount!) works well without it.
I note in a couple of other codec forums, that people have reported problems with it, mainly clashes with other software/codecs -- though I hasten to add that it appears that the codec has been downloaded over 2.5 million times since it was released in 2002, and so must work properly for an awful lot of people. The advice given to those having trouble with it is simply to remove it. I think you would do this by going to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Sound Video and Game Controllers > Video Codecs > Properties, then identify the codec in the list that appears and click on the Remove button.
If later you want to reinstall it, you can find the latest version of it here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video ... fdshow.cfm

I think Windows may have been exaggerating somewhat when it said the codec was required by the system. I have all the programs you mention, and quite a few video editing programs, and don't have that codec, so it is clearly not required by anything (unless the software that installed it is also still somewhere on your system). Anyway, glad it is now working. And in fact I am intrigued enough by the codec to have downloaded a copy myself, since it also apparently has the ability to remove time stamps, logos etc and do a pretty nice job of it too...
