PI6 vs PI8 (or PI10) - Magic Wand, Crop, removes pixels?

Post by ken »

In PI6 if I use the magic wand and then crop, the selection is simply cut out of the original image. Nice.
In PI8 if I use the magic wand and then crop, the selection is cut out and filled in with white. At least, that's all I can get it to do. Not nice.
If I open the crop tool bar in PI8 I can get it to cut the image without filling it in, but it requires two additonal steps, compared to PI6.
Is there a way to make PI8 behave like PI6 for this function?
Thanks!

Are you sure you mean the Magic Wand? I just tried it in PI6 couldn't duplicate what you say happens.

Anytime I want to get an ojbect out of an image like that, I select it, then right-click and convert to object. Now I can drag it anywhere I want.. into a new image and it becomes a separate object.

Here's what I mean.
In PI6 if take this picture -

and use the Magic Wand to select the label, then hit "control+R" this is the result -

Starting with the same picture, and using the same procedure in PI8 the result is this -

How do I get PI8 to act the same way as PI6?
Thanks.

Well, first off, I wouldn't use the magic wand. I would use the selection tool with the circle shape... drag the shape to fit your circle, right-click and convert to object.

The other option would be to select the black parts instead of the label, right-click, Invert, then convert to object.

I think it would be pretty difficult to use the magic wand to select the label and contents unless you have the similarity turned WAY up....

On the contrary, it's fast and easy, which is why I can't figure out why they changed it. In PI6 I can select and crop that label in seconds flat. I hit the red area with the wand, and then press Control+R and it's done. In PI8 I have to select it, then after chosing the Crop tool, open up the Options box, select Active Selection, then hit Crop.
I might be misssing something, but it seems like your method is even more labor intensive. I don't see how to get the circle tool to select the exact circle. And coverting it to an object loses the black outer area. I'm not looking to cut the selection and open a new file, I just want to crop the picture to the size of the selection.
Anyway, thanks for trying. I'll just have to muddle along.

Are you aware of OPTIONS like PRESERVE BASE IMAGE? You can change the behavior to leave background color, or the image area beneath the object - similar to the differerence between CUT and COPY, actually.

(Forgive me if my skimming of the topic has me not addressing your problem.)

That doesn't change the result.
All I'm trying to do is to use the same keystrokes with the Magic Wand that I used in PI6 to crop the selection. I can't find how to do it in the documentation. I've tried every permutation and option I could find to get PI8 to behave the way PI6 does, and failed.
If you have a selection and hit Ctrl+R it should just crop the selection, and not remove or add pixels or color, or whatever the hell it's doing.
This may seem like a small thing, but I sometimes edit hundreds of images in a day. Having to select, than click on the crop tool, then open the options box, then click on Active Selection and then crop, is, let me see, how can I put this.. it's stupid, that's what it is.
The Ctrl+R works fine for the Standard Selection Tool. It's a simple two step process. It's just the Magic Wand Tool that changes the selection.

I guess I should investigate and not be guilty of skimming threads ; }

When I was using CROP with 48-bit data I noticed that ctrl-R didn't work... Once you expect consistency and get fast at your chosen workflow methods it can be frustrating to find these small unchecked bugs ; }

Yeah, indeed I have your results with magic wand and Ctrl-R too. The keyboard combination is triggering something entirely different than a crop of the entire selected data.

So I'm not losing my mind?

We-e-e-e-e-ll... You probably are. Just like I am from not being able to use FOCUS - which has been an indispensable part of my photo tweaking. How THAT bug got past prerelease is beyond me ; }
