Hello I hope some one can help. I have Ulead VideoStudio 9. My camera is a Sony Handycam Digital video DVD camera with wide screen.
I have recorded in wide screen 16:9 and imported into Video studio. Every thing works well except it is not wide screen. If I don’t choose the wide screen mode it is normal full screen but in the wide screen mode it is wide screen but with the right and left side also trimmed off. The final DVD on a normal full screen TV is acceptable but I would like it to be full wide screen. An interesting point is that if I make a still photo from the clip then the still shows as wide screen.
Anyone have any ideas?
Many thanks
The first thing that comes to mind, since you did not post your project properties is that your project is set to 4:3, thus your end result will not be widescreen. Make sure your project properties are set to 16:9 as you are working with your project and see if that is where the problems is.
Good luck.

Hello TubaDad. Thank you. When I open VS9 I clicked and ticked the 16:9 icon at the right of the opening box and then I click to open so it should be 16:9. Once I am in the program is it possible to adjust the settings?
Also how can I post my project properties?
Many thanks
You can check your project properties by going to the menu under file -> project properties. You can then highlight the properties and copy them. Here is a paste of my default properties as an example.
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo
I have a couple of templates that I use when I start a new project. One 4:3 and one 16:9. Here is the 16:9 template properties.
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 6000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo
Everything is close to the same, except the 16:9 and my data rate.
The project properties can be modified by importing the first clip, so you can be surprised by that. Also, when you share to create your video file you need to watch that too. I have templates there too just to make sure. I have been burned a couple of times doing work with 16:9, so I created these templates.

Thanks again Bruce
here is my project properties
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo
So from this it is wide screen but the left and right sides are black. When I right click the clip and choose properties it says
Video type: MPEG-2 Upper Field First
Total frames 31,230
Attributes: 24 Bits, 720 x 480, 4:3
Frame rate: 29,970 Frames/Sec
Variable bit rate (Max. 9100 kbps)
So it lookes like it is full screen by the 4:3
What do you think?
Thanks again
It looks like the clip was captured as 4:3. That would be your problem. I have no experience with capturing 16:9, I have a much older camera. I do recall a couple of threads a while back about this, so you should be able to do a search to see what others experienced with 16:9 captures.

Hello again I still can't find a solution for my problem. The original mini DVD from my camera plays on my TV as wide screen. Only after I capture it into VS9 it changes an trims the left and right sides off. I do have the 16:9 button on VS9 switched on and in the project properties it says 16:9 but when I right click the clip and check properties it says 4:3
I am out of ideas as to how to fix this problem.
I think it's a flaw in the importing module because the same happens
to myself and others have reported this happening from their handycams.
I can capture DV from a DV Tape camcorder 16:9 no problem.
But, a dvd recorded in true 16:9 on a dvd camcorder and imported is re-assigned 4:3 to the mpeg2 clip.
The only thing you can do for now is use Nero to import the dvd and then load the mpeg2 files into VS9.
