Video and Audio out of Sync after Multi-Trim???

Post by Garry Funk »

Nature of the problem:
After using the "Multi-Trim Video" technique and successfully burning a DVD-Video I noticed that the synchronization of the audio with the video gets progressively out of sync as the movie plays from beginning to end (i.e. the sound is only a few tenths of a second out of sync at the beginning but is several seconds out of sync after 1 hour).

The procedure I used was:
1) Open video for Multi-Trim
2) Mark multiple segments of video using F3 and F4 keys to identify desired segments (this probably resulted in a few minutes of removed material throughout the entire video)
3) Click on "OK" when finished

I then proceeded with the remainder of the DVD editing steps until completion of the burn.

Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?):

These files were recorded from my Sony 8mm Camcorder via a Panasonic DMR-ES10 onto a DVD-R disk. The file format in the VIDEO_TS directory is .VOB. There are 3 groups of 3 files (e.g. VTS_01_1.VOB, _2.VOB AND _3.VOB followed by VTS_02_x.VOB AND VTS_03_x.VOB). Within each group the first two files are 1,048,018KB and the 3rd file is 704,748KB in size. There are also .BUP, .IFO files in the same directory.

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?:

After creating the DVD on the Panasonic recorder it is "finalized" (a step to allow other DVD players to use the disk) and then placed in the DVD drive in the Dell computer.

Project Settings:
Default for the program i.e.:
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 7000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD):
DVD-R (from Panasonic DVD Recorder)
DVD-Video from Ulead software

PAL or NTSC:
NTSC

Error Codes (if any):
None

System information:
The computer is a new DELL XPS.

DVDs (VOB files) are MPEG2. MPEGs are not meant to be edited. (Ulead doesn't warn you about this.) Editing MPEGs can cause what I call "sneaky" corruption. The corrupt MPEGs play-back OK, but result in out of sync DVDs. Sometimes they cause the Ulead programs to crash.

You can try making an unedited DVD with the same source file to confirm if the trimming/joining is causing the problem.

This problem seems to have several different causes / solutions. Some users have solved sync problems by turning off Smart Render and some other tricks. (Search the boards for "sync" and you'll find lots of dicussion & suggestions.) I think I got around the problem once by saving individual clips (using Video Studio) and re-joining the clips in a new project. My permanent solution was to get a special-purpose MPEG editor called Womble MPEG Video Wizard ($100). It's an MPEG editor only. You still need software to extract the MPEG video from the DVD, and DVD authoring software.

Hi,
The Frame Size in your Project Properties template is 720x480.
Check that out using the Properties of the source files.

Panasonic recorders usually record at 704x480 frame size.
You don't want any program re-rendering the framesize.
I would change the FrameSize of the project to 704x480.

If the audio is off under "Preferences" (F6 Key) on the advanced tab is an option "Create index file for MPEG seeking performance".
That may help the problem. Maybe.

But, next time you use that unit record onto a DVD-RAM disk formatted in -VR mode. You can cut/split/divide the sections right on the ram-disk.
Faster than the computer.
Then after the disk is ready you can import it into MF ready to burn without having to edit the mpeg2 files.
If you need a dvd burner that can read/write dvd-ram "maddog multimedia" http://www.mdmm.com/ has a triple format burner.
Make sure to get the triple format and not the dual format.
The 3rd format with this burner is it's ability to read & write dvd-ram disks.
You can try "VideoRedo" or "Womble" which are strictly mpeg editors and are supposed to be very good to fix your existing files. VideoRedo isn't expensive and has a 30 day full working trial period.
I think it supports Dolby Audio.

Hope this helps,

MD
