Unable to import .VOB files from DVD-R

Post by Garry Funk »

Nature of the problem:
I am experiencing difficulty importing .VOB files from DVD-R disks that I have created. To date the only work around is to:
1) Open the DVD Movie Factory 4 main menu
2) Insert my DVD-R disk (this is auto detected by the Ulead s/w and begins a copy process to a file called Video 1)

Here's where the problem begins. Sometimes I get the entire contents of the DVD copied (e.g. 1 hr worth of video) and sometimes I only get the first 15 minutes (perhaps the first .VOB on the DVD?).

When I first encountered this problem I thought I'd be able to import the remaining .VOB files but was unsuccessful using the technique described in the manual.

Perhaps .VOB files are not supported on DVD-R disks?

Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?):

These files were recorded from my Sony 8mm Camcorder via a Panasonic DMR-ES10 onto a DVD-R disk. The file format in the VIDEO_TS directory is .VOB. There are 3 groups of 3 files (e.g. VTS_01_1.VOB, _2.VOB AND _3.VOB followed by VTS_02_x.VOB AND VTS_03_x.VOB). Within each group the first two files are 1,048,018KB and the 3rd file is 704,748KB in size. There are also .BUP, .IFO files in the same directory.

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?:

After creating the DVD on the Panasonic recorder it is "finalized" (a step to allow other DVD players to use the disk) and then placed in the DVD drive in the Dell computer.

Project Settings:
Default for the program i.e.:
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 7000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD):
DVD-R

PAL or NTSC:
NTSC

Error Codes (if any):
"Failed to Open DVD, Report ID 0x800408ff (2303)

System information:
The computer is a new DELL XPS. I was unable to identify any further information from the system menu however.

Hi,

The VOB files you described indicates to me you have different recording
settings on the dvd videos correct?
Possibly some videos recorded in HQ mode and another in SD or EP mode. Or a 16:9 aspect ratio for one movie and 4:3 for another?

Panasonic recorders usually use 704x480 framesize so make sure to use
that as your project settings if editting any video.
They record 704x480 at the HQ and SD modes. I think the LP 4 hour mode is 352x480 (half D1) and the EP 6/8 hour mode is 352x240.
Those are dvd compliant frame sizes.

Watch out for the FR mode (flexible recording mode). The mpegs are very hard to combine/edit/join.

The error your receiving is a CPRM error. The error comes up depending on the reading device in the computer.

A workaround is to copy the contents (All the VIDEO_TS Folder including the VIDEO_TS folder name itself) to the harddisk and then
direct MF to import the VIDEO_TS folder from the harddisk.

Or, using MS networking SHARE you DVD drive and remap a new drive letter back to it. Then import using the new mapped drive letter.
Works good and just as fast. This way the program isn't accessing the drive directly via hardware.
You can also perform this method over any home network.
Share on one machine, map to it from another and import from the mapped drive letter.

Sometimes you may receive an error at the end of an import.
Click yes to keep the file. Works either way.

Normally the imported files are now are the timeline.
Delete them (the icons) from the timeline and RE-IMPORT the videos from the harddisk that were extracted. This prevents a small bug from showing up thinking the imported files aren't dvd compliant when there really are. That's usually due to the time-stamping in the files.

Hope this helps,

MD
