16:9 MPEG are read from DVD (properties are changed to 4:3)

Post by jeroenvanwinden »

I'm evaluating editing software (in this case Videostudio 8 ) for my new SONY DCR-DVD201E. This camera writes to DVD in MPEG2 (AC3 audio) in both 4:3 and 16:9. When I use the "Insert DVD.."option for getting new clips. The inserter identifies the 19:9 clips on the DVD as MPEG2 AC3 16:9 files. However when I get them into Videostudio they appear in the timeline having properties MPEG2 AC3 4:3. I can not find a way to reset those properties.

Does anyone know what tric or workaround can be found. Till now my only option is using shareware to convert my 16:9 MPEGs to 16:9 MPEGs, afterwards the software does it right.

Please help,

I especially bought the camera for 16:9 editing.

Hi

Right click the clip in the timeline, select properties, do you see 16:9 in attributes?
If not and you see 4:3 then you have not got a widescreen clip.

I have worked with 16:9 with little problems.

In preferences / tick / show message when inserting first image…….
After inserting the first clip, you will be prompted to change your properties to match your video file.

Set your Project Properties to 16:9 before you import any files to the timeline or library.

In Project Properties tick ‘perform non square pixel rendering’ there is a problem with this option and 16:9 (reported by D Reece).

Hope this Helps

When capturing DV, shot in 16:9 format with the camcorder, in Ulead Video Studio 8.0, it will be captured in the 16:9 Aspect ratio. However, any other format like 4:3 or other can be converted to 16:9 Aspect ratio captured clips. Befor capturing, select the capture format in ULEAD VS 8.0
to capture in DVD. This will convert your camcorder video to 16:9 Aspect ratio clips.

Hi Jeroen,

I also have the SONY DCR-DVD201E and have experienced the same problems when using 16:9 mode. VS 8 will not "capture" the video from the camera, we must import the video from our mini dvd. So we cannot using the "DVD" setting in VS 8's capture mode.

I must also change the header information of imported video to 16:9 using a shareware program called "DVDPatcher" http://mitglied.lycos.de/dvdpatcher . This program will change the video header information without having to reencode the video, but as far as i can tell it doesn't support a batch mode and will only process 1 video at a time.

Jeroen, what shareware do you use to modify the header information? I have been looking for a command line program to modify the aspect ratio header information so i can process multiple videos at one time, but so far i have not been able to find any software to do this. Does the shareware you use modify the aspect ratio without reencoding the video and can it process multiple files?

Thanks,
Greg
