Uploading video, cannot set device control

Post by AndyGon »

Nature of the problem: Attempting to upload video from a JVC digital video camera (GR-DF550U). Need to set device control to MS 1394, but I get the error message: "Unable to open the specified device. Please check if your device is ready."

Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?): attempting to upload from Mini DV video tapes, which were filmed with a JVC GR DVL 9800 digital video camera.

What devices are involved and their mode of connection: my camera is connected using a USB port. Previously, I used a Firewire connection - can I use a USB connection instead?

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD): attempting to output to AVI file.

PAL or NTSC: huh?

Error Codes (if any): "Unable to open the specified device. Please check if your device is ready."

System information: Windows XP version 2002, service pack 2, Intel machine, Pentium 4 CPU, 3.00GHz, 2.99 GHz 496 MB RAM

Usually when you get the message "Unable to open the specified device. Please check if your device is ready." Your camera is not being recogonized by your computer. Try changing your firewire cable and rebooting your computer.

In the device manager your camera should show as an imaging device.

I quote from the official JVC website on your camera, regarding the USB 2.0 port the camera has: "USB PC Link for Email Video Clips (MPEG-4 Streaming and MPEG-1 Video Capture), Digital Still Capture". If you are wanting to capture high quality DV format, or even direct to mpeg-2, then you MUST use the Firewire connection.
