I'm running VS 2018 on Windows 10.
It doesn't seem to be recognizing the video component of Quicktime videos loaded from my iPhone 12s.
The videos load ok into VS 2018, but the thumbnail is black. When I preview the clip, I can hear the audio but the picture is black. The properties are:
Quick Time Movie Files
1920 x 1080
Compression HEVC
24 bits, 1920 x 1080
29.979 frames/sec
Audio: MPEG-4 AAC Audio, 44.100 KHz, 16 bits, Stereo
Files from my previous iPhones have worked in VS 2018 before. But, it's been a few years since I did any editing with iPhone movies in VS 2018. I think that this is the first time that I have used files from my iPhone 12s.
But, I note that Quicktime videos given to me by others are also not working in VS 2018 either. I can see all of the videos in Windows Media Player and the thumbnails in Windows Explorer look ok.
Interestingly, copies of some of the files were sent to me via WhatsApp and they work ok in VS 2018. They are in MPEG-4 format. But, they have lower resolution than the original file. So, I would like to use the original file.
Is there an easy way to get Quicktime videos from an iPhone to work in VS 2018 ?

Re: VS 2018 Doesn't Recognize Quicktime Video
You need QT or QT alternative software that installs codecs so VSP can identify and support animated GIF and MOV.

Another way to get the QT codec can be found here: https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?p=396782#p396782
Apart from that, I see that the video is HEVC/H.265. Have you installed the HEVC Extension from Microsoft which is required for Video Studio to be able to play HEVC video? You can find that Extension in the Microsoft Store. It costs a minimal amount. See also https://www.howtogeek.com/680690/how-to ... 265-video/

Re: VS 2018 Doesn't Recognize Quicktime Video
Thanks for the advice - I tried to load the QT codec from Apple site: https://support.apple.com/kb/dl837?locale=en_US
I got an error in the install and I appeared to be missing this file: ul_catalog.98CB24AD_52FB_DB5F_FF1F_C883B9A1E8E from quicktime.cab
I thought I found a solution here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6200526
When I tried to run each of the components, this is what happened:
Install > AppleApplicationSupport.msi > Click Finish
- Later version already installed.
Install > AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi > Click Finish
- Only had option to repair (not install), so I ran the repair option
Install > Quicktime.msi > Click Finish
- I selected only QuickTime Essentials
- I ended up with the same error and QuickTime didn't load
I thought about trying this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250555828
Which indicates that:
The missing file is actually Microsoft VC80 CRT version 8.0.50727.6195
This file is missing from the installer and so you need to install it externally. Also note I suspect it actually needs the 32bit version.
The Visual C 80 CRT can be downloaded from Microsoft here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/downloa ... x?id=26347
But, I'm not sure that it is pointing to the right item. When I follow the link, it points me to this: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update
I haven't run it yet. I'm worried about messing up my system - since the update is so old (2005).
I may try QT Lite next. I was a bit worried about it since it's such an old file (2010).
Also - I checked my system and it looks like HEVC Video Extensions is already installed from Microsoft (2023-01-25).

Re: VS 2018 Doesn't Recognize Quicktime Video
I installed QT Lite.
The only difference is that I the thumbnails in storyboard view are now white, instead of black. When previewing the clips, I only have a white screen - but I can hear the audio.
In the VS library, HEVC video still has a black thumbnail. I see H.264 videos show up fine in thumbnails and the video plays fine within VS 2018.
Another thought - if I upgrade to VS Ultimate 2023 - will it solve my problem? Or, are these problems a symptom of my Windows 10 setup?
I have Windows 10 Home version 10.0.19045 Build 19045 running on Dell XPS 8930. Dell Bios Date is 2021-09-06.

Re: VS 2018 Doesn't Recognize Quicktime Video
I cannot account for the problems you are having. FWIW my Windows 10 computers have the latest MS updates from last week are are build 19045.2728. So I would not think that has anything to do with your troubles.
Have you thought about installing the K-Lite codec pack?
The only other suggestion I can make is to use a third party video conversion program and convert the video to mp4. Some of us here use the freeware Handbrake. You can set that to produce new files with almost identical properties but with the mp4 extension instead of mov. See if the quality is better than those other copies you were sent and closer to -- or identical with -- the originals as played in Media Player.

Hi
I doubt installing VS 2023 will Improve things.
However, if you are able to provide us with a sample we can test for you.
You would have to upload to a sharing site providing us with a share link.

Re: VS 2018 Doesn't Recognize Quicktime Video
Thanks Ken, Trevor and rwernyei:
I converted the *.MOV files in my project to MP4 using the Microsoft Video Editor (built-in). They all work fine in VS 2018 Ultimate.
They look pretty close to the original and it was a pretty quick conversion - so it's a good work-around. And, since they are a small part of the clips in my overall project, it should be fine.
I would like to get this sorted for the long-term, so I'll have a look at the K-Lite Pack.
Thanks for your help !

Re: VS 2018 Doesn't Recognize Quicktime Video
Did you manage to install Quick time? go to your Start Menu where Quicktime should be listed
It will also be listed in Program and Features
