Videostudio Ultimate 2022 for Win 10 64
I want to fade in at the start and fade out at the end of my video. All the fades etc are for transitioning. How do you do it? I have read and seen reference to placing a black segment the transitioning from that to the first and last clips. Is such a fundamental process as Fade in/out really this neglected? How do I create a black segment?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Fade out at video end
Hi
The programs Media Library- expand Backgrounds to show Solid Colours
A selection of different colours react similar to a Jpeg image.
Drag a clip adjacent to your video clip.
Then apply A/B transition Crossfade.
First you may need to set the durations of the Colour clip and A/B transitions
Go to Settings – Preferences (F6) Edit Tab
Set – Default Photo Colour duration
Set – Default transition effect duration
If you wish set default transition effect to FX-Crossfade
Reboot the program to fix these settings.
If you need to adjust the transition duration on timeline you can either select and drag the trim handles, or double click to open options panel, modify the digital clock to change duration.
There is also a A/B transition Fade to Black that you may find useful, simply drag that over the end of your video.

Re: Fade out at video end
Hello Trevor and thank you for your patient and detailed reply. Every now and then it's better to stop chasing and ask.
Ahah! I struggled to find anything about this in the Help. I saw several articles about fading out, but they all said to choose Color in the Library. They all seemed aimed at older versions. Even here, I had to follow a path through Media to Background and hence to Colours. For instance "2. In the Library Panel, go to Graphic tab > Color"
I am OK with setting lengths etc. It was finding the basic info in Library and online Help that was catching me out.
With the Fade to Black. I tried that, but AFAICS it fades then comes back to a white background. It will only work if I set the Preview Window background itself black.
Anyway enough self-justifying
. Again. Thanks
Nick

Re: Fade out at video end
That's strange. The project should come to an end on the last frame of the fade to black transition. And that frame should be black. It certainly is for me and has been that way for quite a few versions of VS now. Mind you, I usually insert a black color panel at the end anyway since the fade to black transition is usually too short for me. I know I can change the duration of the transitions in Preferences, but that changes them all and I prefer to have the others short. So a longer fade to black using either the fade to black or the crossfade plus a black color panel does the trick. And shouldn't take long now that you know where the color panels are...With the Fade to Black. I tried that, but AFAICS it fades then comes back to a white background. It will only work if I set the Preview Window background itself black.

Re: Fade out at video end
Hi Ken. I believe this is a name I remember from way back in the Sony days?
From what I can see:
- I had my Preview background set to white. The video does indeed stop at the end of the last clip, but the Fade to Black is embedded into the clip. So if you have the Preview background other than black, the Fade to Black, which is designed as a Transition, fades back in again to the Preview background colour. I can see that adding a black clip would overcome that. Or you could set the Out point to just before it starts to fade back in?

Re: Fade out at video end
With the white background, do you only see it when you are playing back the project, or does the white also appear when you have rendered a video of the project?
As for my name sounding familiar, I have certainly been around for quite a while. Your username also seemed to strike a bell with me, though I thought it had just been in the VS context some years ago... I see you first registered here in 2008.

Re: Fade out at video end
Good point. I just tried it and it comes out in the rendered video as well.
But did you see my comment about transparency? It solves all these problems. It is so easy to set a transition to black on your clip and set the duration just for that fade, far better then either using the Preferences for the whole project or for the App. I sometimes use different fade times, just to make sure the viewer is awake!
Yeah 2008 would be about right....I feel old.
You were often a great help back in the day.
