AfterShot Pro vs PaintShop Pro

Post by decastar »

Hello, newbie here.

What can AfterShop Pro (v3.6) do that PaintShop Pro (2020) can't do? I'm talking about editing capabilities (rather than cataloguing or batch functionality).

I mostly edit RAW files from Olympus cameras and I'm finding that PSP can open files from more cameras and recognise more lenses than ASP (I would've thought they should have the same camera and lens database?).

I'm still trying to determine a workflow using one or both of these programs, but I'm having trouble deciding if one has particular strengths that the other doesn't. As far as I can tell, they can both do lens corrections, layers, histogram corrections - WB, colour temp, brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, etc., blemish removal, red-eye, etc. etc. I usually adjust these aspects of an image and I'm not really into adding 'artistic' effects that PSP seems to have an abundance of.

So can you please share your experiences where one of these programs does basic editing significantly better than the other?

Thanks in advance!

Anything to do with RAW Development decently?

PaintShop Pro is absolutely attrocious for working with RAW files, so unless you use AfterShot, or a competing application for that... you're probably better off using a competing application to PaintShop Pro instead of PaintShop Pro itself. It's that bad when it comes to developing RAW Files. The RAW Lab in PSP is horrible and Corel has barely updated it in well over a decade.
