Hello Vista / Adios ULead Photo Explorer?

Post by IanB »

I admire niche products that do their job well. I have and use a variety of other graphics and multimedia software, but for file maintenance (e.g. renaming and tagging) and quick viewing (plus a few other things), I always end(ed) up using UPEx (ver. 8.5 stand-alone), because it's simple, fast and effective. BUT, I recently returned from a trip with several thousand photos to organize and discovered to my horror that Photo Explorer, which had hitherto been working well on my laptop (running on Vista Home Premium, yet) would no longer load (I assume, as the result of a recent Vista patch).

I reported this to support expecting a UPEx patch, but received the form letter below which doesn't even mention Photo Explorer - do I assume therefore, that the product is being abandoned? It was stated that any further discussion would need to be by phone; however I find that unacceptable and so am posting here. No suggestion is made whether any of the other products mentioned in the form letter incorporates the Photo Explorer capability - although I'm not particularly interested in buying a suite when I only require (and already - so I thought -own) a niche product that meets the same requirements. Vista is not exactly brand new any more, so the mods necessary to get UPEx up and running again on should be pretty straight forward and considerably less than rewriting 'the whole program'.

I like ULead products and the company has always, up to recently, seemed to be exceptionally well tuned in to its users. I spent the hour up to this searching the Net for a replacement utility to do on Vista what UPEx used to do for me, but the fact that I had to spend my time doing that got more and more frustrating. Thanks...

(Re thread on PMR: 'ULead Photo Explorer 8.5 - Runtime Error on Vista...')
Thank you for contacting Corel Customer Support Services.

Currently, only MovieFactory 5/6, VideoStudio 10/11, and PhotoImpact 12 are Vista Certified. Future versions are sure to be Vista compliant when they are released. As for the old versions, Vista support may not possible because the whole program would have to be re-written to comply with Vista.

Should you require further assistance, please contact us via telephone...

Runtime Error on startup ver. 8.6

Post by pipersimmons »

It did work and then it did not.
During startup I get a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Error. Next comes a window that states Pex.exe has stopped working, with the option to close the program.
The only solution I have found is to reinstal (repair) the software and it is usable for the rest of the evening.
I thought 8.6 was compatable with vista. Is there something else I should know?

Runtime Error on startup ver. 8.6

Post by pipersimmons »

I ran the above fix and at the time it seemed to solve the problem. I did a reboot and came up with a similar Error window.
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program....ram Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead Photo Explorer 8.6\Pex.exe

adnormal program termination.

Is there a history of this error with 8.6? I think I can make the program usable by reinstalling/repairing the software and not shutting down, but it seems that there should be a better way.

Re-Installation of Ulead Products
If you look at the above 3 posts relating to the re-installation of
Video Studio 9 / DVD Workshop 2 / PhotoImpact 11 you will see that the procedure is in essence the same for each product. From this we can deduce the procedure to be followed for all other products where the only variance will be in the areas marked below. At item 5 and item 7 below the folder will be listed in a table at the bottom of this post.

A simple reinstallation or repair from the control panel might not be enough. Please perform the reinstallation procedure this way:

1 ) Launch Windows Explorer and go to tools\folder option\advance setting to check "show hidden files and folders".

2 ) Purge/delete all the files in these folders:

"C:\Windows\Temp"
"C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Local Settings\Temp" (for WinXP)
"C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact\11.0" (Substitute with your product here)

3 ) Uninstall PhotoImpact (Substitute with your product here) from control panel Add/Remove programs

4 ) Delete the folder "C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact 11" (Substitute with your product here)

5 ) Delete folder shown in list below.
in
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information (Please set "Show hidden files and folders" in folder option in Control Panel)

6 ) Run Regedit from Start/Run in Windows task bar

7 ) Delete folder shown in list below in KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
(If available)

8 ) Reinstall PhotoImpact 11. (Substitute with your product here)

9 ) Install any patches.

Note: Make sure you still have a copy of the installer before you uninstall the software. Before installing, please temporarily close other running programs or applications including antivirus, Norton utilities, screensaver, other memory resident programs including Internet connection, etc. to avoid unnecessary conflict and restrictions within your system.

Table of Folder names for items 5 and 7 above.
If anyone can supply further additions to this list please send a PM to me sjj1805 so that I can include them.

Hi Steve,
You may have seen my posts for 'topic' VS10+ is it worth owning which lists my ongoing woes with VS10+ crashing and how I could make it crash easily.
This post has caused a lot of interest and lots of replies offering advice.
I have emailed the company in Hong Kong who had placed a sticker on the front box.
He suggested uninstalling it similar to your post on uninstalling Ulead products but contained a couple of extra things to manually delete and so I thought that you might like to update your post.
Here is part of his reply ¡V
Launch Windows Explorer and go to
"Tools > Folder Options > View" to check "show hidden files and folders".

Purge / delete all the files in these folders:
"C:\Windows\Temp"
"C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Local Settings\Temp" (for WinXP)
*It is safe to delete all contents of these folders. However, leave any files you can¡¦t delete for now.

Delete these folders / directories:
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems"
"C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 10.0"
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\10.0"
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SmartSound Software Inc" (for full versions)

Go to "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information"

Delete the folder "{E188D820-1218-4E28-8BCA-91134C3664C2}"

Go to Start-->Run

Type "regedit" then "Ok".

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Uninstall

Locate and delete the identity enclosed in curly brackets that corresponds to Ulead VideoStudio 10:
"{E188D820-1218-4E28-8BCA-91134C3664C2}"

Go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio"

Delete the folder "10.0"

Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio"

Delete the folder "10.0"

Close Regedit and restart Windows.

Reinstall Ulead VideoStudio 10.
Note: You need to have "Administrator" privileges on your computer. "Limited" or "Guest" accounts won't let Ulead software install or run properly on your computer.
After re-installing the UVS10, you are highly recommended to install the newly released service pack 1
Regards
John

Runtime error starting PEX

Post by AWJansen »

I found that reinstall will solve this problem only once: after using the program PEX with an external device, you will recreate this problem in the future again! So you need another solution more bound to the reason why this is happening under Vista.

I found another workaround for this problem, maybe my workaround is also usefull for another version than my 8.0. version.
I encountered the problem always after copying photo¡¦s from an external device to my system-drive (in an earlier session with this Photo program).

My solution:
I found another solution(workaround) instead of reinstalling the program:
1. Try to remember wich devices you used in de Photo explorer (USB-stick, external drive, DVD- CD-drive, or photo-camera connected by USB;
2. You can only start PEX(Photo Explorer) with a volume loaded in this devices!
3. if you don¡¦t remember wich devices you used before, plug in a volume in every device your system has.
4. Start PEX. On my system it is then starting without error!
5. If PEX is normaly started: goto File/Preferences/ (or F6 key), take category Cache and under ¡§History¡¨ clean all adresses and maps by clicking the button.
6. Close PEX. Remove all the volume¡¦s you don¡¦t need;
7. Restart PEX. Now the program will start without any error.
8. Advice: each time you use PEX with an external device do action 5. before closing the program.

I use photoexplorer 8.5 and love it. My system is Windows 7 Pro

The biggest hassle is that it crashes about every 5th time I use it. I have found that I can uninstall and then reinstall and it works for the next 5-10 times... and then I do it all over again. I will continue to use this until someone comes up with software to do as much.

Here is what I did...
I found the exe file that installs/uninstalls and have put it on my desktop. this is the path
C:\Program Files (x86)\Ulead Systems\Ulead Photo Explorer 8.5
and the executable file is
"Setup - Extract files for Ulead photo explorer pex85_esd_e.exe".

This exe file is the one that I created the shortcut to my desktop. When it crashes, I run this twice. The first time is to uninstall... the 2nd is to install again. Hope this helps... arrrrggggghhhhhh

The program is quite old and I am surprised that it runs using Windows 7

Have you tried running the program in a compatibility mode , maybe XP.
Right click the program icon and select properties, then compatibility tab.

Also please refer to your first post regarding screen resolution, I will reply there

So, is the question being avoided? Is there a good replacement for Photo Explorer? By Corel or anyone else?

Hi

I do not think the question has been ignored, but you may be best in asking on the Corels facebook site, here you will receive answers from Corel employees.
Corel do not visit this site very often.

Certainly I do not have the answer without browsing the Corel web site or visiting the FaceBook pages.

By the way the original question was asked in 2007

Firstly, I'm aware that this is an old post, but I just found it via an Internet search, and I wanted to update it with my findings for the benefit of anyone who stumbles across it in the future.
AWJansen wrote:I found that reinstall will solve this problem only once: after using the program PEX with an external device, you will recreate this problem in the future again!
AWJansen is correct in diagnosing at least one cause of this problem, but doesn't describe how to resolve the problem if you can't actually start Photo Explorer to access the menus and clear the history.

In my case, the cause *was* a recently opened directory on a removable drive that was no longer attached to the computer at the time the error occurred. To resolve it:

1. I used Start > Run > regedit.exe and navigated to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ulead Systems\Ulead Photo Explorer\8.x\Recent Path" (where "8.x" refers to your version of Photo Explorer e.g. "8.0", "8.5" etc).

2. I then deleted all of the "Item_x" entries that related to the absent drive letter.

I was then able to start Photo Explorer normally.
