HDR loses resolution on Ubuntu 14.04--FIXED

Post by kumsa »

After running different configurations, and working between HDR on RAW and jpg, there is no doubt that the new HDR feature drops the resolution. It shows up right after the first "merge" step. You can see the pixelization on close examination, right within the HDR editor. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 on a color calibrated monitor.

When I first saw this degradation, I stepped back and checked my workflow. I used the Corel test files (http://apps.corel.com/ap/2011_ENP/nz_learnhow_HDR.htm), and didn't see any blurry artifacts. At least I knew I wasn't introducing anything by a misconfiguration. The Corel sample files are very small, and lo-res, so I followed the same documented process on different sets of files: (Canon T2i CR2; Canon 6D CR2, Canon 6D jpg).

Here's a crop of this morning capture of an early morning at Huntley Meadows in Alexandria, VA. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6HsY ... authuser=0. This is the jpg after basic conversion from CR2 (no sharpening).

Here's a crop from the same file processed as HDR: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6HsY ... authuser=0

I'm really looking forward to having HDR process cleanly within ASP, as I'm looking to create a large panorama of the Fall colors.

yes it's same for me,
I run with a Debian Jessie and ASP 64 year APS 32-bit
I use photo 7360x4912 pixels (Nikon D800)
HDR is the result of 7360x4912 but it is highly pixelated
Here is an example:
above, an original photo
down the result HDR

Thanks for the sanity check.

It's a little crummy to almost have HDR , but Corel continues to push forward with features and improvements. I'll just hold my breath.

I've opened a support ticket with Corel, and they have begun examining this concern.

After working with Corel Support (who were pretty good about contacting me and follow through), it was discovered that the Linux release of ASP2 does not have the "options" capability available.

This means, that all exports default to a compressed JPG or TIFF with a loss of detail.

A ticket has been opened to add the full "options" menu choices for saving at higher resolution.

The latest upgrade addresses the issue quite well. Linux can now export HDR cleanly, in either jpg or tiff. Use the TIFF for highest bit depth. Linux still doesn't have the full export controls that are present in Windows/OSX, but everything is working well.
