Image > Stitch

Post by jlovda »

I want to join two pictures horizontally. The instructions I found on Google search says open both images and then open Images>Stitch. My PSP 2021 Ultimate does not have a stitch function under the Image column. Also, typing "stitch" in help brings up nothing. Help

Those instructions were not for PaintShop Pro as you've found we don't have a Stitch option. You were probably looking at the more expensive software Photo-Paint that comes with CorelDRaw.

PSP has merge functions, but those are meant for aligning multiple images and overlaying them either for HDR or for removing /combining images into a single image. What we don't have, is stitch/panorama tools.

There are panorama plugins available like the Hugins panorama, but those are kind of hard to use.

Microsoft still provides ICE (Image Composite Editor) that can do panoramic stitching and it's free. - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/researc ... te-editor/

Otherwise, for PSP you have to open one image, go to Image -> Canvas Size and expand the size of the canvas to accommodate the second image. Open the second image, copy it, paste it as a new layer in the first image, and manually align them by sight.

+1 on the Microsoft ICE; it's quite good.

Microsoft ICE

WOW! This program is super fast and super easy. I worked great. Thanks for the suggestion.

John

Followup.... Microsoft ICE is amazing. I went back into my archives and pulled out several series of photos I had taken with the intention of stitching but never figured out how to do it. I can see that using a larger number of narrower shots such as 85mm looks better than fewer 35mm shots. Thanks again.

This would be a VERY useful feature to add in a future PSP version.

It would be handy but sometimes difficult tasks are better handled in narrow-purpose software. Otherwise you can end up with poorly performing bloatware that tries to be all things to all people. I use ICE and then bring the images into PSP for whatever I need to do with them. In the same way, I use Qimage for printing because nothing else can touch it for quality and color management. That's something PSP needs to improve but history suggests not holding one's breath. For editing, I still like PSP over anything else.
