As I understand - or at least the internet says - TIF(F) files are able to have layers but whenever I save a file as a tiff file PSP merges the layers.
Another post referred to pspimage as the way to save layers intact...
What's the truth of this. Is the only way to save layers to use Corel's own format? That doesn't make sense....
Thanks Richard

Re: layers and file formats - tiff
PSPImage is the official image format for PSP that supports all of the PSP features that can be saved to a file. PSD (Photoshop) images can also be saved with layers, though there is far less compatibility with this format for reasons only Corel developers know. Of course PSD format supports Photoshop features and many of those are not supported by PSP so it makes sense that PSP would save a limited version.
TIFF images are different. PSP only supports baseline TIFF images. Baseline TIFF images do not support layers, they do support multiple pages (sub files) but TIFF readers are not required to read more than the first page of a TIFF file. Layers are one of the TIFF extensions. Each editor can decide for itself which extensions it wants to support. If you want support for saving layers to TIFF I recommend adding it to the wishlist.
