Smart Selection Brush Freezes Program
The Smart Selection Brush stopped working causing the program to freeze and I have to close it through task manager. I have Paintshop Pro X7. Windows 8. 8 GB RAM. Both 64 and 32-bit gave the same issue. Other selection tools seem to work though! I have noticed that this issue faced other members but could not find a solution for! I wonder if anybody would have an explanation or a solution for this problem! Thank you.

Oh dear, that's not a good combination.
PSPX7 should be getting a service pack soon, which might (or not) help with the Smart Selection Brush freezing.
As for Windows 8, that is causing problems for a lot of things, not only PaintShop Pro.
I don't have Windows 8, so can't try.
Not a lot of help, I know

If you have bought your copy of PaintShop Pro X7 less than 30 days ago, you could request a refund from Corel. Worth a try?
X6 is good.

Re: Smart Selection Brush Freezes Program
I also have Win 8 (well 8.1) (using 64 bit) and can't replicate the problem. A Service Pack may help but I would hang in there with PSP. It is a great program when you get to know it (and it works.)
Adverts for Corel products when you close PSP don't bother me.

Hi--Though I'm using PSP X6 Ultimate and Windows 8, I have the same problem. See my post OCT 10, 2014 in PSP. A fellow member has a suggestion for a fix, but I have a few more questions (which, as of this date, have not been answered) before I try it. (The tool has probably been corrupted.)

Re: Smart Selection Brush Freezes Program
Thank you for your reply. I have tried to reset the program to its defaults using the shift key; however, the problem still persists!!

Re: Smart Selection Brush Freezes Program
I have exactly the same problem. The problem occurs on Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with: PSP X6, PSP X6 64bit, PSP X7, and PSP X7 64bit. It looks like there is something that is used by the Smart Selection tool that is corrupted. I have to force the closure of PSP by using the task manager.

Re: Smart Selection Brush Freezes Program
Count another one here.
The Smart Selection Brush persists once chosen. I can't undo (CTRL+Z) or use the functions described on the screen for CTRL to remove or CTRL+D to reset. I switch selecting tools and it is stuck on Smart Selection Brush. I hit the Text and the Smart Selection Brush is still there. I close the image, reopen or switch to another image and it is still ON. Forced restart clears it, but I CANNOT touch that tool because it will not go away once chosen. Hope that helps.

Re: Smart Selection Brush Freezes Program
Same problem here. Only a restart will unselect the tool.
I used the tool on Sunday evening, today is Wednesday (so we are not even looking at a week between use and loss of functionality).
I've tried all of the above listed "resets" and the only thing I accomplished is wasting time.
Someone throw out a solution ... not a perfect tool, but sometimes it is the easiest, fastest and best tool for a job.

Re: Smart Selection Brush Freezes Program
Reading these posts seems to indicate that the problem is not innate with the tool itself in that it sounds like it worked for everybody for at least some period of time and then, for some reason, seems to have become corrupted and then just persists. This makes me wonder if, somewhere along the way, users have made some change(s) to the options for the tool in the tool options bar for that brush and if something specific in the new options might be causing the problem. If that is the case AND if some option is actually corrupting the tool then it might be necessary to do a clean uninstall (using the uninstall tools in the sticky near the top of this forum) and reinstall - not something I like to suggest except as a last resort. If doing so, save your workspace first.
If, on the other hand, the tool isn't completely corrupted but it is still caused by some tool option chosen, perhaps try manually changing some of those settings while the tool is active and see if that allows you to change tools. Perhaps the size of the brush chosen might cause issues if using a large brush on a large image. Not likely to work but perhaps somebody with the problem might try it and report back.

Re: Smart Selection Brush Freezes Program
This has happened to me too several times while using PSP Ultimate X6. I seem to have found the solution--at least for me. If I have too many images in my Pictures folder,
the smart selection brush won't work. I'm not sure what the capacity beyond which the brush won't work, but any time it won't work and I delete some images, the
brush goes back to working. I'm not sure what the connection could possibly be; but I think it might be worth your while to try this, since it's such a cool brush when it does work..

Re: Smart Selection Brush Freezes Program
I'm using PSO2018 and the Smart Selection Brush is freezing the program. No other selection tool will do this. I've reset the database, checked my files to make sure they weren't corrupted, reset the program, logged out and logged in and still nothing happens. Short of reinstalling the program, can anyone help me? I'm using Windows 10.. Thanks!

Re: Smart Selection Brush Freezes Program
Further to Jean-Luc's suggestion about the scratch disc, if you have multiple hard drives you should choose a disc that is not the same one where PSP is installed, which is likely your system disc. The faster the disc and/or more free space that scratch disc has the better performance you'll get. That applies even if the scratch disc suggestion doesn't help with this particular issue.

Re: Smart Selection Brush Freezes Program
Thanks, Jean-Luc for your suggestion. I tried doing that, but the screen is frozen, so I can't pull down that menu. I have to go into Task Manager and end the program just to change the screen.
A scratch disk? Please help as I'm unfamiliar with the term. How would I go about doing this?
Thank you both.
