16 bit gray TIFFs opened as RAWs

16 bit gray TIFFs opened as RAWs
I'm trying to open a 16 bit gray TIFF created with VueScan in PaintShop Pro 2021, but Camera RAW lab window appears for some reason. Why?
I expect it to open the file as normal, without making any adjustments, just like it's done with other types of images.

Just so you are aware, I have drawn the attention of the Corel developer for PSP, Joseph Lin, to your two posts.

Re: 16 bit gray TIFFs opened as RAWs
You can deactivate the camera raw lab to load the tiff file normally...
If your tiff file is uncompressed, I have found a windows solution : open the folder with the file(s) in Explorer and right the file or selection of files and click on "Rotate Right" wait for completion and re- right click on the file(s) and click on "Rotate Left".
Then the files will be loaded normally.

After such rotation Windows applies LZW compression to the file, which is not acceptable.fs999 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 07, 2021 2:03 pmYou can deactivate the camera raw lab to load the tiff file normally...

Re: 16 bit gray TIFFs opened as RAWs
As fs999 mentions, you can turn off loading images through the camera raw lab. File -> Preferences -> File Format Preferences. Under the "General" tab, uncheck "Open RAW Images with Camera RAW Lab" and the images should open just fine for now.
It is just a workaround and if you open actual raw images and you want to use Camera RAW Lab you'll have to turn it back on. Hopefully Corel will get back on this, as in my memory it's been a recurring problem.

No, if I disable Raw lab in settings, it does not pop up, but the file opened is extremely washed-out.LeviFiction wrote: ↑Wed Apr 07, 2021 6:21 pmAs fs999 mentions, you can turn off loading images through the camera raw lab. Re: 16 bit gray TIFFs opened as RAWs
So why is LWZ not acceptable? It's a lossless encoding and does support 16-bit encoding. Of course it would be better if your scanning software supported it or at least RLE. I wouldn't want to do it through Windows
Re: 16 bit gray TIFFs opened as RAWs
Because despite the word "compression", files have bigger sizes compared to uncompressed ones. Moreover, uncompressed files are opened and saved faster.
And it's still a bug in PSP that for some reason couldn't be fixed for months.

Re: 16 bit gray TIFFs opened as RAWs
The difference is not big. If only PSP could read Zip compressed TIFF files...
Re: 16 bit gray TIFFs opened as RAWs
In my case the difference is about 30%.
I don't care about disk space, but I'm not going to look for some weird workarounds or convert all my uncompressed TIFFs only because this nasty bug cannot be fixed for more than a year.

Re: 16 bit gray TIFFs opened as RAWs
Hi Ruymura,
Thanks Ken bringing this problem for getting my attention. Your understanding is correct and the TIFF file should be able to open without CRL (Camera Raw Lab) in PSP. The situation you encountered on the TIFF file created by VueScan is a little strange. Since we don't have any TIFF file created by VueScan for troubleshooting so it's not easy for us to take a look soon. If you don't mind, could you share a few TIFF files for testing purposes? If you need a shared space, let me know and I can create it for you.
Cheers

You only have to save an image with the option uncompressed in PSP and you will see it is lighter when reloading. When loading this file with darktable or rawtherapee, the image is correct, so it is only a read problem of PSP.

Re: 16 bit gray TIFFs opened as RAWs
I do not experience this issue with uncompressed TIFF files saved from PSP fs999. I have tested several files, and they all load in exactly the same as they were saved. To verify I took the original image, added it as a new layer to the TIFF image, and set the blend mode to difference. The result is a pure black image, verified by the Count Image Colors command. So they were 100% identical.

Here is the TIFF file from VueScan that causes Camera Raw Lab to appear:josephlin wrote: ↑Fri Apr 09, 2021 5:17 amHi Ruymura,

If CRL is disabled in PSP settings, the file is opened immediately, but looks washed-out (as if too much brightness or gamma was applied).

Did you try with scanned file ?LeviFiction wrote: ↑Fri Apr 09, 2021 4:09 pmI do not experience this issue with uncompressed TIFF files saved from PSP fs999.
