Applying frame mask to a cropped video

Post by cybernick »

I believe VS lacks a serious feature.
Let's say you have a video in overlay and you want to crop a specific portion. It is easy with the crop tool in preview. The issue is you can not apply any frame mask. Because the frame mask is applied to the original video not to the cropped one. Do you have any suggested solution for that?

You can crop your video > save as vsp > import vsp > put in TL as clip > apply frame mask

Thank you. I will try this.
But I believe Corel should somehow fix this.

Nick are you referring to Mask Frames or Video Masks
I find Mask Frames work ok the Video Mask is a different matter as it has been created from frame one of the video then runs to the length of the mask, the video mask available appears to have been created over a 3 second video file. and that is the length of the mask.
The video mask file is here - C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 2021\Samples\Video --- Video Matte 01.mp4

As an option we can trim the clip – then File Save as Trimmed video will create a copy of that trimmed clip, replace the clip on the timeline with the new clip.
But yes maybe the mask should start at the beginning of the trimmed clip, has been raised by Asik in the past.

Sorry, somehow i missed your earlier replies

I mean about mask frame in matte mode.
Actually you can not even create a border. It only applied to the edges of the original video.

I misunderstood, I thought you were trimming the clip, must make an appointment to Specsavers.
I now see you are using the Distort Tools - Crop Mode then applying the mask.

I do not know of a solution to this as effectively two masks are being applied, one when cropping and the mask frame that is applied to the full frame.

If your original video is off centre and has that white bar I would suggest using Customise motion to correct that, render to a new video file
Then you can resize the clip using the scale mode, the Mask Frame will apply correctly.

If all you want to do is add a simple frame after cropping your overlay, why not insert a solid colour between the overlay and video and resize appropriately.

This is also a solution. But in my case I slightly change the size position during my edit. So it will be time consuming. But thanks anyway.

Another option would be to make your own mask, with that in mind I modified the mask you were using to remove the white bar
The video no longer needs to use crop, the mask appears to work ok although I did not know the exact width of the white bar.

Then again, for a border you can use custom motion.
