So I try again. First remember this is only an issue with 2020 ultimate. All OK with 2019. The actual project was a carol service for Christmas in lockdown which I did complete using 2019 Ult. It was made using recordings made in 2014 and 2019. There were four cameras used in 2019 all starting within a few minutes of each other and running for about 1 1/2 hours. subsequently sync'd using multicam lite.
I then bought 2020 Ult. when I got a cheap offer from Corel, and decided to make some shorter videos using the original 2019 files.
the four cameras were 1) panasonic HC X800 (MTS Files), 2) Panasonic HX WA 20 (MP4 Files), 3) Canon Legria HF R66 (MTS Files), 4) Zoom Q2 used largely for the audio (Mov Files)
Each camera automatically split the recording into segments.

The HX X800 into 5 parts 2 of which worked fine and 3 were green!
The canon was also 5 parts - all green
The Q2 3 parts 2 green and one OK
The HX WA 20 MP4 files all OK
Each cameras segments had the same properties as would be expected (I assume)

That was yesterday!

Today I tried loading the files to the library again
HX X800 All 5 files OK
Canon 2 OK 3 green
Q2 as yesterday but programme closes down as soon as I press play when file is in timeline.
HX WA as yesterday

Is there a size limit for uploading files - they are almost 4Gb each segment.

PS the 2 Panasonics were borrowed and no longer available. The Canon is mine but being used by my daughter during lockdown so also not available at the moment.

regards
Chris

Of course, so I'd suggest that you cutoff a small segment and post it to a file sharing website (most people don't want to download a 4GB file).

Have you tried converting your file to a standard format using something like HandBrake and then seeing if the problem persists?

Hi tletter
Thanks for your comments I have converted some files and that works OK. However I don't need to really because they work fine in VS 2019. The purpose of my question was to try and find out why they don't work in VS 2020.

Davidk
Thanks to you as well. Unfortunately I can't do a 'green' version screenshot because after switching my PC off last night when I came back to it today all 17 files which I put into the library yesterday are now working perfectly!!

In view of the moving goalposts I think it is something of a waste of our time.....

Some background on turning a PC on or off, FWIW . . .
In the early days of PC's, the electronics used to make them was less reliable than it is now. Things have massively improved in 30 years. Back then, power (turning it on) and thermal (starting from cold to operating temp) shock was often enough to cause chip failure, so leaving the PC on overnight became a habit to overcome these problems.
And in the early programming of PC's, coding was - to put it mildly - less than good, interface standards not as well defined and good coding practices largely something that had yet to happen. As a result, many programs leaked memory from the common pool they all use. There are threads in this forum that discuss memory leaks in greater detail, suffice to say that over time they grow and choke the system. Regular system starts reset this issue, so frequent starts removed the effect, but leaving the PC on for long periods of time exacerbated this leak problem.
Fast forward to today, and there is now no technical reason to leave a PC running continuously, and quite a few economic ones to turn it off every day, and start again the next day or when ever you need it. Desktop PC's for example typically use about 400-500 watts of power, and often that much again if you have a graphics adapter installed, so leaving it on overnight (8+hours??) unused is costing you for the 4kw of power per day that it did nothing.
Turning the PC off when not in use will fix any memory leaks that still exist in modern program code (and there are a few nominated that affect VS), doesn't affect reliability, and will save you some sheckels from your bank account.

Thanks Davidk
I'm afraid my knowledge is getting more and more out of date so info like that is welcome.
amongst other things I think I need to brush up on properties - both file and project which I find quite confusing at times. Using different makes/models of camera probably doesn't help. Generally I am amazed at the programmes ability overcome my ignorance and produce a half decent result!
