Asking for help with an effects mask

I'm working on a wedding video (conversion from VHS) for a friend of my mother. I'm wanting to use an Instant Project template for opening titles, which features an Autosketch transitioning to a photo under a heart mask. I grabbed a good screenshot of the bride and groom at the altar, but the bride's face keeps getting cut off by the mask. I have tried editing the screenshot by adding padding to try to move the image up and left a bit, but it seems to do no good. If I add too much padding it shows up under the mask and spoils the effect. If there is a way to reposition the photo under the mask, I haven't found it. Attaching screenshot:

Any help is appreciated.

In case I understood you correctly, it should be possible.

Just select the mask from track and then you could resize it on the preview by dragging from corners:
VS-Forum-Resize mask.jpg
Please noticed, you could move it as well for the better position, if needed.

And then it looks like this:
VS-Forum-Resize mask2.jpg
Now you just need to resize it so that bride become visible.

If you look at the placeholder 1, that is also oversized for the heart shape.
As the mask is applied to the actual image any resize will affect both, so yes you can change the size but the image will change as well, it will not reveal any more of the faces.

Your easy option is to resize the image before using in Video Studio so the faces become relatively smaller, that would mean increasing the size of the background / canvas
The heart image is HD-AUTOSTROKE 02_START.JPG, using that will help in resizing your faces to match the hear before adding to the template.

That's essentially what I did, isolating that particular clip of the video and trying various combinations of resize until it came close to what I was hoping for. I should have picked a frame with more background, i.e. smaller faces of the bride and groom...would have given me more edge to work with. As it was, if I resized it down too much the edges of the frame capture became visible. And that IP template, while beautiful, is very tightly knit; it's just not simple for someone (of my skill!) to dissect, change, and put it back together again without spoiling the effect. But I got it close. Thanks to you both for the help.

another option would be to edit the HD-AUTOSTROKE 02_START.JPG, deleting the heart, then save as PNG, the heart shape being transparent
add to overlay 3 with your faces in Overlay 2 will position and resize

Your faces image could have its canvas resized, then fill / copy the background, that may overcome colliding with the edges.

Trevor,
I'm currently using VideoStudio Ultimate 2020, 2 licenses.

I realise you have two copies of the Video Studio program
I was asking about the version as seen in Help About as that will indicate if any or all service packs have been installed

my version shows as 23.3.0.646

@Trevor
(sorry to ask, but like to learn more from VS)
When you wrote Oversized, what do you mean by that? Overlay tracks? As on there you could have different sizes on the images:
VS-Forum-Mask.gif
So I'm not sure why the image on the overlay2 track could not be scaled to smaller?

I was referencing the placeholder 1 being to large / oversized
The size of the number “1” is a little larger than the mask / hole so not all the number is visible.
The same can be said for the faces they are larger than the mask so the mask does not reveal all faces.
If the image was taken further away (smaller faces) there is more background, the faces will show through the mask / hole.
We cannot change the mask size as that has to match the video on the top track
The easiest option is to resize the image but that will mean increasing the canvas size, so some work to fill in that border.
I suggested using the heart image HD-AutoStroke 02_Start.jpg as a template to match the new face size.
Or delete the heart to leave a transparent heart, save as Png
Now we do not need the mask for Clip 2, add the faces image to overlay 2 and new HD-AutoStroke 02_Start.png to track 3
The image will show through the hole and allow us to position and resize on the timelines
I have to say the template does not make it easy to modify, using a mask was probably not the best option although this template was make many years ago, if it were made today I think the transparent png would be used

You say
"So I'm not sure why the image on the overlay2 track could not be scaled to smaller?"

in your image above, if you try to resize the clip on overlay 2 you cannot reveal any more of the tree, and that is the same for the brides face, partially hidden

Ah. On the computer on which I did the editing (I eventually made it work, close enough, by resizing the photo) the version number is 23.3.0.646 (64-bit Ultimate). Sorry to take so long to get back to you; Christmas stuff, y'know.

But that leads me to another question, probably best suited for another post: What happened to all of the Beginning/Middle/End Templates which I had up through VS 2018?

I am having additional problems where the heart mask is not available, yet your image shows the faces masked so working ok
As for the Beginning Middle and Ending as far as I know should still be available, but as I say I am having some issues with the program which is very messed up, so I have a rather limited Templates Library, I’m about to re-install to see if I can fix things.
