8gb RX580 vs 6gb GTX 1660

Post by Pro-Bit Computers »

Hi I am working with a client to spec a new machine for use with your VideoStudio Ultimate 2020 as an editing machine.

We are looking at the video card and what would be best for this program, an 8GB AMD RX 580 or a 6GB NVIDIA GTX 1660. Does CUDA make a big difference?

Can you help with the decision making by explaining which card would be utilized better thanks

As far as users on this forum reports VS do not care much for system GPU.
Other software on his workstation might do.

I have a 1660 with 6 GB, but not useful here. However, other software can make use of it. I works well on my i9 computer.

Well, VS2020 does not support AMD graphics cards, so all the heavy lifting (rendering, etc) will be done with the CPU. I know, I have an AMD graphics card.
As aski1 said, what other software will the user be using. But if VS2020 is the main use, that leaves only Nvidia (CUDA) or Intel integrated graphics.

I've "lobbied" for AMD graphics support. Why alienate a double digit percentage of graphics card users..... other editing software support AMD, why not VS.

So I'm trying to buy a video card and I'm so glad to read this as AMD 580 was my first choice.

so back to the drawing board. When looking at Nvidia cards, what should I search for spec wise? the number of Cudas, what about 4 gig vs 6 or 8 gig of memory.

I don't want to spend a fortune but I need to have glitch free editing and with my current PC I need to rely on the video card for help.

Thanks!!!!!

@Bill Aggie, there is a lot more than just a graphics card that will make editing "glitch free".
No software is "glitch free", especially something as complex as video editing software. Go to any professional editing software forum and you will see people with problems. That's why there are updates.

Then there is the other hardware you have in your computer. What CPU? How much RAM? SSD or mechanical drive? What type of video files will you be editing?
And... what other software do you use?

AMD has been rock solid for me with the software I use. Pinnacle Studio now uses AMD graphics for hardware acceleration, and reading the forum, it's Nvidia that has had problems. It's only a matter of time before VideoStudio has AMD acceleration.... As for how much RAM in the card, do you game?

I'm waiting for prices to come down. No way am I going to spend more than MSRP for a card... I can wait....

Well I got a simple AMD Socket 3 - 3 physical cores cpu. it's not great but it almost runs video studio in edit mode. so I did sneak to ebay and got a deal on a GTX 980TI for under 200 and it has 6gb memory. I figured I can at least get my editing done without the video on my editor giving me fast stills rather than live video. Hopefully I can turn on the cuda co processing since it's turned off. it was only $200. I did look at updating my system but there's a pc parts severe shortage and prices are double when you can find it.
