Multiple versions of VS under windows 10 - are they OK?

Post by Davidk »

I've posted elsewhere about my problems with windows 10 and VS. At a class today, an instructor in windows 10 asserted that it would not allow multiple version installs of the same program. This seems 'unlikely' because windows 7 does allow multiple versions, but will only execute one at a time. But I would not put anything past MS at this stage. And the easiest way to check is to ask the forum.
Thus, this query is for those users who use windows 10, and who have multiple versions of the program (eg, X10, 2018 and 2019) but in any event more than one - like the admins - and those copies are installed on the same PC and the same windows user identity
1. are they correctly operable eg starting VS and then opening the share page correctly?
2. to illustrate - open one version eg X10, does the share page open and display everything?
3. repeat 2 for each version you have.

Hi David
I have no problems in installing multiple versions of Video Studio on a Windows 10 platform
Last year I had programs from X4 to the latest version.
Then I did a clean install of all versions now I have from X9 to 2019, I was a bit unsure about removing X7 as that was the last version without problems.
A few months ago I found the need to install VS12 aka X2, it’s a 32bit so wont really conflict with the latest 64 bit programs.
I have no problems in running every version the Share panel displays and is fully functional for all versions
Not withstanding the constant silent crashes that plagues 2018 and 2019, which caused me to revert to X10 so I am sure that is fully functional.

I have 5 different versions of VS all working under Win 10 - which was converted from Win 7 just before the free conversion period expired -- all open and operate without any problems being apparent - even those that we did have problems with after one particular Windows update and we had to apply fixes for

Consider to get CVS 2020 and running along with CVS 2018.
So we just to install the CVS2020 as normal with its plugins ?
Is it the right step ?
Thanks in advance

Hi Chaofei
Yes that would be the normal approach, we have always been able to install multiple versions of Video Studio.

There are some issues we are aware of at least for some users, problems running Video Studio does not seem to affect everyone.
One example would be the installation of Graffiti and Mercalli where these plugins may be shared by both versions.
Uninstalling 2020 may affect 2018 Graffiti although easily fixed.

Corel did quote the phrase “ Version Collision” indicating that one version could affect another, no specific details, where things do go wrong that we should uninstall all versions, I was unsure if installation should be done in chronological order or just the latest version.
You should have no problems with installation

Oh one thing to consider, projects made using 2020 cannot be opened using 2018, there is no options to save the project as backwards compatibility.

What benefits are you looking for that 2020 gives compared to 2018?

Give the trial version a run, although limited in its functions should work ok for say MP4 video

Hi Chaofei
I would advise you that the Bonus Features and indeed the other Contents packs are automatically installed when installing the main program, or should be provided you have not deselected the options.
Generally when installing Video Studio, the installation seems to hang at 100% as your image indicates, usually and it is my experience that with a bit of patience the installation will complete.
Yes we can manually install the Bonus Features and Contents folders but may / could run into activation issues especially if installing Plug-ins individually which you should only be attempted when trying to fix program issues
As you have recently installed the program all features should be working.
When installing multiple versions of Video Studio I always install the oldest versions first.

We do know of some issues that could be classed as Version Collision
Tell us what you think is missing from the program that makes you wish to run the installer again?

Hi Trevor,

I have installed VS2020 last week and have been corresponding with Corel support with no success regarding some of the installed features.

The same computer has an older installation of VS2018 Ultimate. Both programs are working run well in the same PC.

My issue is understanding the installation process and I note your reply to Chaofei (Re: Multiple versions of VS under windows 10 - are they OK?) regarding content packs and their (new or shared) locations.

When I installed VS2020 Ult the main screen showed that the install process had detected that Standard Content2 was already installed and was displayed on screen with a red tick. My issue is that I don't know what the contents of 'standard content 2' actually are and how I can ascertain if they are indeed installed.

Can you tell me what the contents of standard contents 2 are so that I can check to see if they are installed in my installation of VS2020 Ult

thanks

Content Pack 2 is additional material for MyDVD, go to Program & Features and if installed, scroll down and you should find MyDVD Content Pack 2 465MB

I have experienced the same problem

To fix this I uninstalled MyDVD Content Pack 2 from Program and Features

Then running the stub again should show the contents as "not installed" and proceed to installing the full pack, including MyDVD Content Pack 2

OK it was a dumb question... I was looking at Corel install not thinking control panel ...

Yes MyDVD content pack 2 is there (install 26/3/2020)

So I delete this ... whats the next step to install from the VS2020 Ult download files ?... or use the VS2020 installer again. Is stub an acronym ?

Any hints on the process would be appreciated
Thanks in anticipation

Hi wiselx
use the VS2020 installer again

When you purchased Video Studio 2020 you were provided with a file VideoStudio2020_Installer.exe at 6,977Kb
This is commonly known as the Stub, think of it as a “download install manager”
The downloaded program files by default will be saved to a folder on your desktop, here you should find the Stub (VS2020 installer)

Run that, one of the panels shows a Complete and Custom option, choosing the Custom option should show the packs installed and indicate that Contents are not installed.
Continue to install should complete as ok.

If all are marked as Installed then I guess all is installed correctly
