Importing (GoPro) H.265 Videos Locks Up VS Ultimate 2018

Importing (GoPro) H.265 Videos Locks Up VS Ultimate 2018

Postby AGiLiT » Tue Sep 04, 2018 10:29 pm

I have a new GoPro Hero 6 and recently also updated to VS Ultimate 2018. When i tried importing some videos shot in 4K, VideoStudio would lock up. I originally opened a ticket, thinking it was a problem with all 4K videos.

Further investigation led to the finding that it was not all 4K videos; in fact it had nothing to do with 4K: it was any video recorded with the H.265 codec (which GoPro does for a number of resolutions at higher frame rates). Just touching an H.265 video in any media import attempt locks up VS and requires killing it with task manager.

Other testing led me to believe it may have something to do with the video adapter in my computer (Radeon RX460) because the GoPro Quik editing software also has the same problem on the computer I have VS on; but works just fine with H.265 videos on my laptop, which just has integrated Intel graphics.

Interestingly, Windows Movies & TV app (and the Cyberlink PowerDirector 14 that came preinstalled on the computer) both can play the H.265 videos, although the PD playback is pretty jerky.

I contacted technical support and (hopefully) updated the information associated with the ticket. I have been told it has been escalated to a higher level for resolution. It's been almost 2 weeks with no response back as of yet.

Lo and behold: Today I found a workaround! Changing the compatibility settings for VS to Windows 8 makes it work just fine! (See attached screenshot).

I tried passing this info on to technical support to update the ticket, but I don't think the person I spoke with understood what the workaround was.

Hopefully, this info may be helpful to someone else.

Welcome to the forum, goprofan!

First, can I ask you if you have tried the solution that AGiLiT provided i.e. making your Video Studio work in compatibility mode with Windows 8?

Secondly, can you please right click on a Hero 7 video clip in the Video Studio timeline or library window, and copy ALL its Properties here; or you can take a screen shot of the Properties box and upload it here as an Attachment.

If you have an account with a website like Dropbox which allows you to upload large files for download by others, it would also be very useful if you could upload a small sample of Hero 7 video which we can download and try out at our end. I only have a Hero 3 Black, but that works fine with Video Studio. And I know the Hero 7 has all sorts of new additions.

Hi Ken,
I interpreted goprofan's message, "thank you very much ! you really helped me! now program not crash." as meaning my solution did work for him. I understand he still has the audio stutter, which I think may be addressable through some configuration and/or usage settings.

Just FYI, the Hero 7 continues the implementation of the H.265 codec first introduced in the Hero 6, which is the model I have.

I did get this message back from customer support a couple of days after my original post with regards to the ticket I opened:

Thank you for contacting Corel Technical Support.

After reviewing the facts before me, it has been found that the problem being reported is already known to us and has been reported to our Engineering department for review and action. This case will be elevated to the Engineering team to have action against it.

Any replies or further communications, will come from me, once the Engineering team has provided a solution.

Regards,
Austin

My story is: I have i7 core,10 gb ram,128gb ssd disk with installed Windows 7 32 bit and already licensed Videostudio Ultimate 10.
Graphic card was old ATI HD5970.I long time edited my vacation videos and music video for car from mp4 youtube and from Panasonic photo camera 720p.
All goes fine.
These days I buy Gopro 7 and try on that configuration above. The results was: 4K video plays and sound stutering in project timeline without any added efects(4k mp4 file size is 2.7 gb,the file is on SSD)
Then I go for my PC upgrade: I buy new SSd 1TB and installed graphic card RX580+ windows 64 bit clean install with HEVC media pack from microsoft
and installed trial Video studio 2018 (my buyed license was win 7 32 bit ultimate 10)
and results is : Crashing program when point to 4K files and the mp4 full HD file downloaded from youtube plays with artefacts !!!!
OMG : the windows 7 32 bit old PC configuration was better !!!! So I several days try to find solution, because I want to use Ultimate video studio.
I think a lot of people have gopro these days and it be nice to run that program smooth.
By the way when I with windows 7 32 bit hd5970 card edite stutering audio vodeo 4 k file from GOPRO 7 on TV it plays sound ok.
Conclusion is that with high configuration PC video ultimate 2018 works bad and there is bugs.
Why I should run that program in windows 8 mode ???besides it runs buggy too !

Thank you AGilit for this solution! I had the same problem with my GoPro 7 videos and VideoStudio 2018. Running with Windows 8 compatibility helped. Any ideas have they made any better fix for this?

After I got this under control, I had another problem with GoPro 4k videos. When I used them and render it to make video file, the 4k video looked horrible. With the latest update of VideoStudio that seems to have been fixed now. Still I can't render to HEVC because I'm using Windows 8 compatibility and the program gives error for that

Hi

I know this is an old Topic, but I have exactly the same problem, it seems that this is still not fixed with the newest Version.
Importing of H.265 videos from a GoPro 7 result in a crash of VideoStudio 2018. In Win 8 Kompatibility Mode this works and I can work with these files as normal. But I can't render it to H.265, H.264 output works fine.
So finaly, H.265 (from GoPro 7) to H.265 does not work.

Do someone know, if there was at anytime a bugfix for this?

In detail:
I have installed and tested VideoStudio Ultimate 2018 (V21.4.0.165)
With other Video Editing Software and Players I have no problems with any file or codec. E.g. Adobe Premiere, Magix, DaVinci Resolve, vlc
All testet on two complete different PC Systems except the Windows 10, but exactly the same result.
PC systems:
One with AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, GTX 1650 SUPER, 32GB RAM, NVMe SSD, ...
Other Intel i5-8500, Onboard GPU, 16GB RAM, NVMe SSD, ...

Thanks for any advise

Hi Radon
And welcome to the forums
I do not have GoPro nor any H265 video other than a few samples so cannot really test Video Studio using H265
Corel Video Studio 2018 is a few years old now and as such would not be getting any updates from Corel, at least I would not think so
Ken Berry as far as I know does have a GoPro camera and is more likely to be able to help here

As a thought, when you import your video to the timelines I assume you see a message to match the project settings and select yes / ok to that
Then from Share have you tried the options top left for Same as Project Settings, and Same as First Clip, the latter probably the best option.
Those options should render using the video files properties.
I do not think that the program supports Hardware acceleration for AMD, you should try deselecting those options, ( F6 – Performance tab)

If you can provide a sample, upload to a sharing site and provide a link on your reply, we can try using those on our systems for 2018 and other versions.

Hi Trevor

Thanks for the fast response.

Here is an 5 sec original GoPro 7 File (4K, 59.94 fps, H.265):
https://download.tim-s.ch/sharing/cgBEVwgwn

Other H.265 Sources which is rendered from DaVinci Resolve or Handbrake, can be imported without any issues in both Modes.

In "normal" Win 10 Mode, VideoStudio crashes, when I import this File right befor this message box appears. I can't do anything with it in VideoStudio. So, same as the first Post.
In "Windows 8 compatibility mode" I can import it and work with it as normal. But not export to H.265, here I tried with "Same as Projekt", "Same as First Clip" and a couple different H.265 options, the render process need less than 1 sec and create a file with 0 Bytes. I can change the settings to H.264, then the output works.
I think here is the problem, Windows 8 have no support of H.265. Or lets say probably the "HEVC Codec for Windows 10" have no support with the compatibility mode. So, here I don't expect a solution.

I know there is the 2019 and 2020 version available, but I don't need any of the new features of them. So, I have to Update because of a bug from Corel? I realy hope not :o
But if someone can tell me, it is really working with version 2020, I have one more option

Edit: I just testet version 2020 right now. And this is working from and to H.265 in Testmode.

Thanks,
Radon

Hi
Thanks for the sample
Using 2018 as soon as I try to select the clip the program goes Not Responding,
Task Manger shows that and a CPU usage of 30% ish indicates that something is happening, usually a bit of patience pays dividends, but not this time
Taking so long I had to End Task
CVS 2019 and 2020 imported the file without problems
A little slow on my pc but then its not supposed to manage H265
Show Messages appeared which is always a good sign so was able to match the Project Properties.
Share Same as First Clip was not available, I thought that to be unusual, I rendered to same as project, render was slow.
I noticed the data rate at 60Mb had been reduced to 46.6Mb even though the settings showed 60Mb, same for 2019 and 2020
Media Info also showed the data rate as 60Mb so I do not know why VS has that discrepancy to 46MB .
Using CVS 2018 I was now able to import the new clips

You mentioned HEVC codec are you referring to this one
https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/p/hevc- ... verviewtab

Ken Berry is in NZ but will be about later and sure he will like to play with the GoPro sample.

Post Updated
Ok Wow
Not expecting anything to change I set CVS 2018 to run with windows 7 compatibility
I had no problem in importing In fact I had to reboot and make sure I had opened the right program, yep imported without any issues.
The only codec I have installed is from the link provided above
lost for words

Two things. Yes, I have a GoPro but it is now quite old and came out well before GoPro included H.265.

Second, I don't have VS 2018 and strangely cannot even find the installation file on my external USB drive where I have quite a few other versions. I will keep looking.

However, I have no trouble playing that clip on VS 2020. I already had another H.265 clip from a recent GoPro from another user. And that too played without problem, and could be rendered out to a new H.265. That clip rendered out with exactly the same Properties as the original. With this clip, the bitrate was, however, slightly different at 59030 kbps which is slightly down on the original's 60272, though not so much that you would notice. Certainly the quality remains excellent.

I will continue to look for VS 2018 and will report back if I find it...

I have VideoStudio X9 and am having these same issues with Gopro 7 videos.
I changed compatibility modes and can open to the library but VSx9 crashes upon playing.
I opened a ticket before I found this thread.

Can we assume you have the Microsoft H.265 extension loaded on your computer?
