PSP 2019: Image snaps to center when using a tool

Postby Billy Yank » Fri Sep 07, 2018 4:37 am

I just upgraded from X9 to 2019 ultimate

Whenever I attempt to use a tool on a zoomed in image, the view snaps back to center.

1. Load a large image.
2. Zoom in and pan away from the center position.
3. Invoke a tool, like Crop or Gaussian Blur.

The view immediately snaps back to center.

This also happens if you try to adjust an edge of the crop area, making almost impossible to set a precision crop.

Has anyone else seen this? I searched the forum and the help files, but I didn't see anything. I'm hoping it's just some setting I'm overlooking.

Are you using Essentials or Complete Workspace ? Try to switch to Complete.
You may also uncheck Tabbed view.

I was using Complete.

I just tested in Essentials also. Then I tried with/without tabbed documents, with/without the document window maximized, with/without the PSP window maximized, all in both Essentials and Complete.

I still see the same behavior in all the different tests.

I don't see it on my system.
The image stays at its zoom level when invoking another tool and doesn't jump to its center.
Only the crop tool has a different behaviour : it jumps to the center but it is it's normal behaviour now.

You need perhaps to reset PSP (not reinstall, only reset) : launch it with shiht key down until it asks if you are OK. Say yes.

Resetting PSP didn't work either. The behavior is still the same.

I am not getting what you describe except for the crop tool . But then you may not have described it correctly as well.

I work in Edit mode with a large image and in windowed mode rather than Tabbed documents.

If I zoom in to a section to one side of an image and choose the crop tool, then the large image re adjusts to show that centre of the image zoomed in.

If I do the same and choose the Blur > Gaussian blur, the large image does not recentre on the centre of the image, BUT the preview window does (which may be what you mean)

In Most tools the preview window zooms out so you can see the whole image whereas in the Gaussian Blur , and Motion Blur the preview window is zoomed in to 100 on the centre. In the Radial Blur it zooms out so the whole image can be seen.
So the problem is with Crop too (disaster in many ways) , Gaussian Blur and Motion Blur which show the preview window zoomed in. Also Adjust > Color> Channel Mixer.

Nope, I'm talking about the actual image window, not the preview.

@hartpaul , does it also snap to center when you grab one of the crop area's edges?

I usually work in Complete, with the image window maximized and a minimal number of palettes docked around the outside.

I was contacted by a support tech who had me delete my %temp% files as well as reset PSP, but it still didn't work.

In my experience reading this forum for years, and listening to the experience of others who have tried to get help from Corel support with issues, that rarely works. They seem to send template responses, and most of them have to do with either reinstalling, resetting and/or deleting stuff like - in your case - temp files, or maybe cache.

It would be nice if their support people actually knew the ins and outs of the program and provided actual answers based on their actually testing out the issue presented to them. But then, I also wish I'd win the big lottery, and wishing or hoping for that hasn't worked for me either. :-)

Was not sure about what you meant here but my assumption

1. Load a large image
2. Activate crop tool
3. Drag edges of crop rextangle to make it small and drag it to a small section off to one side or near a corner.
4. Zoom in to that area using the scroll bars
5. Now try and refine the crop rectangle by dragging on any of the nodes and it jumps back to the centre dragging that corner with it and you have to do it all over again making sure you get the dimensions right because you will not be able to adjust the rectangle except on a full view of the image. No good for fine cropping.

It doesn't have to be a large image; a visually enlarged image will do.
(Use the scrollbars to decenter the image.)
Only the Crop tool will reliably re-center the image when invoked.
The image is unmoved when I drag the edges of the Crop tool.
However, the image is re-centered when I adjust the height of the Crop area.

Wow you guys are right. This new auto centering behavior of the crop tool is really bad. Just submitted a support ticket with my complaint. For what ever that is worth.

That's right, the problems with the crop tool coming from PSP 2018, and they are "unfortunate". A good app destroyed by mediocre developers.

I have an update on the support ticket I submitted about the crop tool. Specifically, I complained about the snap-to-center aspect of the crop tool. I got this response from them today.

After reviewing your case, it was found that the issue you submitted is already known to us and has been reported to our Engineering department for review and action. This case will be escalated to our Engineering team to provide proper resolutions about this matter and this ticket will be put on hold and we will contact you once the issue has been fixed. We appreciate your patience.

I would urge anyone else who doesn't like the crop tool to submit a ticket and put further pressure on them to get this fixed.

Re: PSP 2019: Image snaps to center when using a tool

Unfortunately, Corel has had many, many advisories about ALL of the various issues with the newer versions of the Crop tool - many, if not most, provided to them prior to PSP 2019's debut. They have ignored all of them.

So if you - or anyone else - expects to see some actual changes to that tool that have been requested by many, many users with the past two versions, I would suggest that you buy lottery tickets instead. These responses from Corel's alleged "support" have not panned out with any changes whatsoever. And, in fact, the crop tool has continued to suffer further degradations and lack of convenience for use.

In another very recent thread, one Corel person responded to someone's complaint about the crop tool - similar to the response you got. So you'd think, at least, that this Corel person was monitoring the thread.

So I immediately replied to her response asking if Corel was going to address all of the other complaints about the crop tool that had been circulating in this forum for ages. As I expected, there has been no response from that person to my request for information.

Basically, all they do is - once in a blue moon - indicate that they do see these complaints in the forum, reply with some standard boilerplate, and then ignore us when we ask for specifics.

As I said in another thread, the term "Corel support" is an oxymoron. Corel doesn't really want to make the changes we request from what I've seen, because they have already made up their minds about what they want to do and just want to make people believe that they listen to our requests. They just want to do what they like to experiment with because some programmer(s) want to do what they want to do, and the customer's input is really beside the point.

I suspect that they're a pretty egotistical bunch and don't like to be told that some of the stuff they implement just doesn't work for most users, and - in the specific case of the crop tool re-invention - that it does NOT conform to user expected or normal, conventional behavior.

And when they ignore a reply asking for more info to one of their posts - in a thread obviously being monitored by that Corel person - that just adds more credence to the point that they don't really care. Pretty abysmal, IMHO.

JoeB

Well, I am using PSP 2018, not 2019. I can confirm that this recentering behavior exists with the Crop tool.

PSPx9 also recenters the image and resizes it too. But it does not rotate the image; it rotates the Crop tool.

PSPx8 32-bit recenters the image and allows the Crop tool to rotate (not the image).

PSPx7 recenters the image and allows the Crop tool to rotate (not the image).

I have PSP x6, x4 and 11, but they are not installed at present. I could install them but the job should be something that a Corel coder does.
