Different files sizes when saving, bug or feature [PSP2018]?

Postby xeo » Sun May 27, 2018 12:09 pm

Why there are differences when saving unchanged files?

For example: Default picture file = 5MB
Opening and saving it as (Save as) = 6,2MB
Opening and saving it (Save) = 2,3MB
Opening Saved as file (6,2MB) and saving it = 2,3MB

Of course there's no picture quality change. Works for all files. Where the difference came from?

In my opinion this is a very poor implementation of the Save/Save As function in PSP and has been brought to Corel's attention many times over the years.

When you use Save As you have the option of setting the compression, and the size of the resulting file is shown. Any compression above about 5 will result in a smaller file size. If you have two images open, Img-A and Img-B, and you used Save AS for Img-A, if you then Save this file after more editing the size will be maintained in the current session (without closing PSP) but after closing PSP and editing this file in a new session it would be treated like a new save.

If you now work on Img-B and use Save for it, PSP applies a default compression, roughly 20, so that the file is reduced from the original size. So if you care about the compression used you must use Save As, which adds to the number of clicks needed.

PSP prompts for the compression (uses the Save As interface) the first time Save is used in a session. Subsequently, no prompt appears when Save is used and the default compression is used.

I would like to see the whole Save function updated so that:
- the user can set the compression
- and that compression would be used in Save and Save As (retain that functionality as is) until the user asks to change it
- excluding steps to change compression, saving should require only one click

Technically this is not a bug but in my opinion a very poor implementation of a fundamental function, used almost each time a user uses Edit. A search in this forum for save and compression should show extensive discussions on the subject.

As you know there are different modes for setting of ZIP compression.
Also different versions of PaintShop Pro has different compression set as default. So file created lets say in PSP X5 and opened and saved in later version as X5 are different. Content is the same, if are not used newer features of later version.

In my opinion "Save" function by default shouldn't compress at all (or set at 0% compression) because I don't want to degrade the quality of the photo unconsciously. I didn't notice that for years using PSP.
Only "Save as" function should have possibility to change compression value.

I agree 100% with that.
