Some MP4 Files Cause Hang

Some MP4 Files Cause Hang

Postby bcf1ca » Thu Jun 28, 2018 12:16 pm

Hello
I've recently returned to Videostudio, purchasing the Ultimate 2018 version. The last version of Videostudio I used (and still own) is Videstudio X6.

I am currently within the 30 day return period and am trying different things to see if the program will meet my needs. I've run into an interesting problem. When I try to insert a MP4 file that is created on my Samsung camcorder, the program hangs. However, when I try the same file in version 6 of Videostudio, it imports just fine. I've also installed the program on my desktop system with no previous install of Videostudio and get the same result, so it can't be a version conflict. However, I tried another MP4 file from a different source and it works just fine on both computers.

The properties of the files are as follows:
The one that doesn't work:
Width: 1920X1080
Data rate: 10981kbps
Total bitrate: 11109kbps
Frame rate: 59.94 fps
Audio bitrate: 127kbps
Channels: 2 (stereo)
Audio sample rate: 48000kHz

The one that works:
Width: 1280X720
Data rate: 1434kbps
Total bitrate: 1560kbps
Frame rate: 29.90 fps
Audio bitrate: 125kbps
Channels: 2 (stereo)
Audio sample rate: 44100kHz

Both computers are running Windows 10, version 1803. It seems very odd that the more demanding file works okay on a very old version of the new program I just purchased.
I've opened a support ticket with Corel about this, but I'm wondering if others have experienced the same issue. Corel support has not been helpful so far. If it's a program limitation, I will regretfully uninstall VS2018 ask for a refund but don't want to do this until I've exhausted all avenues.
Thanks in advance for any input you can provide.

Barry

P.S. If anyone would like to try the file that doesn't work, please PM me and I'll send you a OneDrive link to it.

Hi Barry

And welcome to the forums

Yes I would like to test your file, I assume Corel Support would also ask for a sample.

Its annoying when older versions seem to cope where the latest struggle.

I will pm you, I may not reply till later in the day

Hi Trevor
Thanks for the fast response. I got your PM but because I've just registered on the Board, I get a message that says I can't reply because I need more activity on the Board. I could email you the link, but need your email address...

Hi Barry

Just to keep this post active, Barry provided a sample via PM.
I had problems running that file using 2018 with the program stalling / freezing but earlier versions X8, X9 and 10 coped with the sample
I then used X8 to render the file to Share – Mpeg4, choosing the default template.
Now 2018 is able to open and play that new file. I guess that’s one option whilst Corel comes up with a fix.
There is a Batch Convert, not tried that as yet, but should work rendering multiple files could be the workround.

I'd also like to test the video. Barry can find my email address below my computers specifications under my avatar.

Barry kindly sent me the link to his video. However, I can't even get that clip into the VS 2018 Library. The progress bar got to about 95% and stopped and the little blue circle keeps circling. I thought I would give it a while to see if it would eventually insert. But it has been over 5 minutes now and nothing has changed. VS is otherwise unresponsive. Pressing ESC does not abort. Had to use Task Manager to close VS.

I tested it with VS X10, which had no difficulty both accepting and playing the clip. Cyberlink Power Director 16 also had no difficulty with the clip.

Like Trevor, I rendered the clip, though I used X10 as the only other version of VS I have on this computer. I used Share > Same As First Video Clip. I tried inserting the new video produced this way in the VS 2018 Library. VS simply disappeared without any warning message. The same thing occurred when I tried inserting it into the VS timeline.

I went back to VS X10 and this time rendered it to default MPEG-4 settings. However, the video produced this way still caused 2018 to close without any warning message. So it seems a bit curious that while X10 can play, edit and render the video, the new video it produces still isn't accepted by VS 2018 -- at least on my setup.

Hi Ken
This is exactly what happens to me when I try to insert the file into the VS2018 library. I was able to run the file through a conversion program (AVC Any Video Converter) into MPG and MTS formats and get them into VS2018 but I'd like to avoid having to do this. Thus the post...

I really appreciate the interest you and Trevor have shown about this issue. It's nice to know that it's not my hardware that is the source of the problem. Hopefully Corel Support will find a solution. I will keep the board informed of progress.

Rest assured it has been raised with Corel VS developers. They haven't given a response as yet, though.

Barry

I have just re-installed the 2018 program with no patches, running version 21.0.0.68

I do not have any problems in running the video file.?

I do not know what service patch 2 fixed but does seem to have an adverse affect to your Mpeg4
That patch updates the program to 21.2.0.113, -- i believe

Hi Trevor.
Wow-I never would have thought to try this. I did the same thing (uninstall/reinstall without the Service Pack). My MP4 files will now insert in VS2018 without a problem. So, the Service Pack has definitely broken something. I'll add this information to my ticket.
Thanks for the suggestion.

I was just advised by Corel support that the issue will be fixed in Service Pack 3, which will be released "this month". Here's hoping...

Service Pack 3 (which was released this morning) appears to have resolved the problem I was having with the MP4 files in Service Pack 2. All good here!

Thanks again for the support provided in the forum.

Barry

P.S. There is no information about the changes in the Service Pack...
