Update 1.1.1.10 removes Noise Ninja

Postby afx » Wed Feb 13, 2013 5:31 pm

Anyone who relies on Noise Ninja should refrain from installing Version 1.1.1.10.
The sole purpose of this update seems to be the removal of Noise Ninja as the licensing deal between Corel and Picturcode seems to have ended.

( have not seen any update notifications for this yet, but had reports from other users that got a notification...)

cheers

Hmmm...

When I have some time I'll need to look into the legality of an update that exists purely to remove the ability to use a paid-for, user-licensed piece of software.

The licencing deal between Corel and Picturecode might be done, but my contract with them, which buys me the right to use the full functionality of NN in ASP, hasn't ended - in contractual terms that should stand in perpetuity; to release an update without making it very clear that this is its intent, and without giving users information on which to base an informed choice to update or not, is at best sharp practice, and - I suspect - downright unlawful.

Jeez. It just gets better and better...

As I wrote above, I have only some reports outside the forum. Nobody else has seen that yet...

Any information if you ore-owned NoiseNinja? I own NoiseNinja Pro and have been lurking the forums to decide if I want to purchase ASP. I tried ASP over a year ago and did not like that I did not have NoiseNinja full control as in the PS pluggin or stand alone application. Your news is not welcomed at all.

For me it's almost a non issue, as I been using Wavelet Denoise for some time, but not having a default noise removal solution isn't that smart...

Indeed, who cares about NN when you can have Wavelet Denoise ? And more to the point, who still cares about ASP anymore ?

That very much depends on the image content.
NN registered is much better at keeping detail.

And more to the point, who still cares about ASP anymore ?

Those that have loads of images with AS settings?

I am still using ASP for B&W images. There is a certain look that I have developed in ASP that I find hard to replicate in other converters. There is a wide range of options to convert to B&W whereas in other converters there's often only one. I developed Bez to provide tools to manipulate luminosity to provide my B&W style, and It's hard to do the same in other converters. I shoot in very low light and so NR is important. I find NN easier to use than Waves, and as afx said, I've got a lot of edited images that contain NN settings. So if NN is removed then I can't afford to upgrade. One day I will have an unsupported camera that I want to use for B&W, and then I will have to make some difficult choices.

But for colour, I have never really liked ASP's rendition of colour. It may have solved some problems for Canon users, but for Nikon I have really struggled, esp with skin tones. B5 is an option for supported cameras, but for newer ones, I have decided to look elsewhere. If I don't like the colour, and ASP is dead in the water, what other choice is there?

Well it sucks anyway.
