Selecting a part of text string

I am attempting to select a single letter of a text string. Been searching far and wide and cant figure it out.

Newbie here so forgive me if this is simple question.

You do it the same way you select a single letter (or multiple letters or words) in a text string when using a text editor, MS Word, etc. With the text cursor still active just click and hold in front of the letter to place the cursor at that point and drag it over the letter then release the mouse button. This will highlight the letter and you can change its size, color, etc.

Or you can do Objects > Convert Text to Curves > As Character Shapes.
Then in your Layers Palette click the white arrow to the left of your Vector layer. THis will show another layer with your words on it and to the left of that another white arrow.
Click that arrow and you will see a number of layers matching each letter.
Double click a letter layer and you will get a Vector Properties dialog box which will allow you to change the color of the fill or stroke and also the stroke width . Clicking OK will provide a bounding box around that letter which will allow you to move the letter to a different position . You cannot however change the font style - use Joe's method for that.
