vhs tape with tv programes and family holidays on

Postby andybaz » Sun Jun 30, 2019 5:56 pm

Hi all, just upgraded from ulead10 to videostudio11se - my vhs tapes at some point were used to record TV then had family holidays saved on them .... i can play the full vhs tape through ulead10 but in videostudio11se the same tape, when the family footage stops and eg shows 20seconds of tv recorded footage ... the sw says tape protected and doesnt record. Anyone come across this situation before ? any views gratefully excepted cheers andy

Hi Andy
And welcome to the forums
The programs are very old being Ulead 10 and 11 about 12 years ago.
The 11se is a special edition aka short edition as such may not have the full function of Ulead 10.
Ulead 11se was probably bundled when purchasing hardware, capture card etc.
And if my memory serves me correctly there were some issues with the full version 11 provided by Ulead / Corel regarding capture, it was a long time ago.

I assume you are connecting the VHS player via an analogue capture card which would have come with its own software which may be preferably than using Video Studio.
Once captured the files can be imported to video studio timelines to complete the movie.
Otherwise continue to use Ulead 10 which appears to work for you.

The latest version some 12 years on is CVS2019 but I cannot say if this will capture from your analogue source, you could give the trial a run.
But as above may be best using the capture cards software.

Hope that helps
Regards Trevor

Why did you post this in 'Video and DVD' when it clearly should be in the Videostudio forum - perhaps one of the admins will move it for you

do you also realise that Ulead Videostudio 10 is nearly 15 years old and that the 11se (special edition) was only a free trial and may have some functions removed

having said that if it still works for you then I suppose there is no reason why you can not carry on

if family holidays were just recorded over a pre-existing TV recordings then it is not at all surprising that when the holiday videos end the previous recording would show - it is what I would expect to happen - what do you see if you play the tape in a VHS player direct to a TV and allow it to continue after the family holidays end - surely that also shows the previous TV recording - why would it not - unless the TV recording was deliberately erased then recording over part of it will still leave the rest of it showing

both of your programmes are so old that it is stretching the memory a bit to remember all the options but I seem to remember that there was an option to "stop capture when video ends" or something like that - maybe you need to find that setting in 11se if it exists in an adapted free trial - or just manually stop the capture at the end of the holiday and trim the end off that you don't want - you are after all using a video editor and trimming the end is a very basic function

First of all, if your old UL10/11 software and the vhs player still works when capturing the vhs tape, then use it for all the tapes you want converted (see last para below) - when the tape or part thereof you want has been captured, then go to edit mode and trim to suit (no other edit features yet) and render to a suitable format like mpeg-2. Import that result into videostudio and apply any edits, filters, voice over etc you want and then save/share to the format you want.

Note however that because its a vhs tape, ie analogue and possibly burdened with tape scratches noise etc, the resolution of the converted result will look like crap against today's HD standards. Some of the filters in the videostudio kit could clean some of that up.

There are analogue to video converters available: plug in RGB plugs to VHS player and the output is via USB to PC. You play the tape and the PC records the digitised video in a file that can be saved and used in other programs requiring digital files. So, if it's a 2hour tape, it will take 2 hours to convert. I have a device sold by Kaiser-Baas, called Video to DVD Maker, and its a specialised A/D converter that came with a specially tweaked PD11 (?) program from Cyberlink that accepts/reads it as an input device, and allows saving as a digital file. Videostudio won't recognise the device because it hasn't been adjusted to do that. The saved converted file can be imported to any video editor for editing etc. Again, because these are converters from VHS which is a format long gone, such devices tend to be one-time use items: once all the tapes have been converted you don't need them anymore.
