how do you change the speed of an animated overlay

how do you change the speed of an animated overlay

Postby delboy007 » Thu Jun 28, 2018 8:12 am

I have an overlay object that I want floating slowly around the screen. I understand the speed matches the length of the clip but what if you want it slower ?

If the overlay object is an independent item in the overlay track then just use "Custom Motion" on it and you can make it move at any speed in any direction over whatever time you want

I have gone into "customise motion" and have set the direction but can't see where you set the speed

You set the speed by setting how far the animation moves in the time you give it to do so - speed is set by how far in what time

For instance - if you were told you had to run the whole length of a football pitch and were only given 5 seconds to do it you would have to run very fast - but if you were given an hour you would wander very slowly - you need to get your head around the combination of distance and time resulting in a speed -- if you slow your animation down then it is not going to complete unless you give it more time

all sorts of movements are possible -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4L8jGHHzg4

Hi

As Brian says use Customise Motion, we can set keyframes and position our clips.
Attached is a quick sample, notice the keyframe at 2 second.

My problem was I wanted to slowly move across the football pitch until I faded out half way (an excellent analogy as these days it describes my performance perfectly).

In your example both objects move at the same speed throughout the clip.

However for my purpose I have finally got my head around the fact the length of the overlay clip doesn't have to be the same as the video that is playing so I can make the object move as slowly as I want and then add a key frame and adjust opacity so it fades out.

So for now I am sorted and thanks everyone for your help (this is honestly the best forum I have ever used)

However as far as I can see there is still no way of changing speed in the middle of an overlay clip. The speed.zip demo didn't seem to work. the image is in the folder but it doesn't show in the project for some strange reason the image doesn't show up

You change speed in the middle of a clip by adding key frames and setting less movement between them - it's how far you move between key frame which determines the speed

Sorry about the problem playing the project file

try this one using a text box, runs across the screen in 1 second then diagonal takes longer

thanks for the example.

So I assume the longer the line, the slower the speed.

Ok but what if you want to go in a straight line ? I suppose you would need to copy the clip and have a different one for every time you wanted to change speed ?

The speed depends on the distance between the keyframes not the line distance

The first and second keyframes are close together (fast) the second and last are apart giving a slower playback
