upgrading from VS9 to VS10+

upgrading from VS9 to VS10+

Postby Ilene » Tue Sep 19, 2006 2:08 am

This may be a stupid question but I'm finally getting around to upgrading from VS9 to 10+. I have been using Ulead since VS8 - and I use it for business, so I always hesitate to make changes when things are working smoothly. I've played around with VS10+ on my laptop and sucessfully upgraded - but I have yet to do it on my main editing PC. My main editing PC runs on Windows Media Center and my laptop uses XP home so it's not necessarily apples and apples.

I was wondering what happens to VS9 after you install VS10+? Does anything in the install of 10+ alter the registry or operability of VS9 - or can I still go back to 9 and complete projects that I've started. Or if 10+ starts crashing or doing funky things - can I always go back to 9?

I'm sorry if this sounds silly - but sometimes when things are working perfectly it's hard to make changes....Some of the new features in 10+ are really nice and I want to take advantage of them....so I'm planning to do the upgrade.

Any advice would be helpful.

thanks.

Rest assured that the two versions can happily co-exist on your computer with no conflicts. I personally have VS 8, 9 and 10+, and others have not only these but earlier versions still...

That being said, there was an issue for some people when deleting VS8 after loading VS9 when they allowed the uninstallation process to delete certain files which were said to be no longer of any use, but in fact turned out to be. But a Repair (or reinstallation) of VS9 fixed the problem. And I am not aware of any similar situations arising from the removal of VS9 after VS10+ is installed.

upgrade vs9 to 10+

Hi Ken - thanks for responding. I actually wasn't planning on uninstalling ver 8 or 9. I've left 8 on my computer all the while I used 9 and figured I would just do the same with 10+. I was just hoping that 9 would stay "as is" in case I ran into any editing/rendering problems with 10+ - it took me so long to produce "perfection" with 9!! I'm just being over cautious about making changes....espcially when I have deadlines on projects I am workingon. I appreciate your input!

best regards,
Ilene

Note that a 'Service Pack 1' patch has been released for VS10. Look at this thread for specifics;
