This morning I took the notebook I bought last july and which I use for vacations "far from home". It has PSPX9 installed.
I installed PSP2018 and immediately tried HDR.
The first try was finished without any problem - just like on my desktop pc.
I turnd the laptop off, rebooted and did a second try - and Merge freezed at the very same point of the process.
Then I started PSPX9 and started Merge - which ran properly without any problem.

From my point of view it's no matter of any background processes. It's a bug.

Agree here. It is repeatable. It occurs on different systems. Common denominator is PSP 2018.
It does not occur in PSPX9, X8, X7 or X6 on the same system.
It should be relatively simple for Corel to compare the codes in X9 and 2018 and check out the differences and find out exactly what is causing the bug.
Instead of blaming the user and their different systems , their virus protection programs their firewalls or whether they are an admin or not.

Today they asked, with which files the freeze happens and where the files are from.

Could you all please report the bug to Corel so they learn that it is not only me?

To follow up on Marco73's post, please remember that this is a volunteer moderated forum rather than the PSP complaint department, so ALL of us should contact Corel DIRECTLY to get a ticket assigned to their complaint. The more formal complaints that get logged in that they HAVE to respond to, the quicker this might get fixed.

Got a reply from Kevin at Corel after I filed a formal bug report, and tried everything he recommended, and none of it worked. The weirdest part is that if you hit F1 when the black bar shows up in the HDR module, the help page for PSP X7 comes up! WTF?? All traces of PSP X7 was eradicated from my hard drive long ago, but the help page still comes up. Could one of you try hitting F1 when your HDR module freezes, and see what comes up? And as I already said above, everybody who has this problem please bug Corel formally, to force them to look at this. Thank you!

In their latest reply they asked for the tiff files I want Merge to process.
They still can't believe that their program is buggy .... makes me want to destroy something ...

Well I got a response from Corel:
"I see you're having product issues. I suggest resetting your product to defaults.
1. Press and hold down both the Windows key (to the left and right of the ALT keys) and the R key.
2. When the Run box appears, type the word - appdata - and click the OK button.
3. A new window will appear. This window is the Appdata folder.
4. Open the Local folder.
5. Locate and open the Corel PaintShop Pro folder.
6. Right-click and rename the 2018 folder to 2018OLD then close the folder.
7. Open up the registry editor by typing regedit in the run window and always backup the registry before proceeding.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/322756
8. Goto: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Corel
9. Expand the PaintShop Merge folder.
10. Rename 2018 folder to OLD2018 and X10 folder to OLDX10.
11. Go back to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Corel
12. Expand the PaintShop Pro folder.
13. Rename X10 folder to OLDX10.
14. Close the registry editor.
15. During launch, hold the shift key down on the keyboard while clicking on the shortcut for Paintshop Pro 2018."

Followed the procedures and the first merge worked correctly just as in X&, X8, X9. I am using 3 jpg images 2000 x 1333 pixels.
Tried a second set of three images and got the freeze and lost access to the Save and Close button.
Back to the drawing board Corel.

That's what they told me to do, too.
I told them I already did so by uninstalling PSP2018, deleting all Corel foldes and re-installing PSP2018.
The did not insist on my doing this after that.

Followed the procedures and the first merge worked correctly just as in X&, X8, X9. I am using 3 jpg images 2000 x 1333 pixels.

Same here.
And I told them that this happened! So why did they ask you to do so?
Corel does not listen, Corel does not learn.
Corel just puts new labels on old software and gets our money.

Today they wrote that my mail has to be forwarded for further examination.

So it took twelve days to pass the "just ask him the questions of the checklist we gave you"-stage of the support system ...

This was my reply to their representative two days ago:
"Hi Xxx,

I have done all those steps exactly as described.

I then processed three images - same ones as shown in my first attachment to you.

All worked correctly and I was able to access the Save and close button.

Then I tried again with another three images - Similar to the images previously but perhaps half a stop difference ( I took 7 shots in that set and used three of those in my first test)

This time the merge froze again and I could not access the Save and Close button.

I tried with the same images in earlier versions and all worked correctly in X7, X8 and X9. So it is not a problem with my system but due to a variation between X9 and 2018.

Do you not get the same problem at your end when you try and do subsequent Merges of three images after a first successful one? Do you have images to test this properly?

I am using jpg images and can zip and send the images to you if you wish to test further at your end?"

So far no request for images, no admission or denial about the bug.

The main problem I see so far is that this HDR feature is not used by a lot of people or perhaps not a lot of people on this forum.

I am adding three smaller images to this post, so that anybody else can test this procedure of File > HDR > Exposure Merge and see if they can get the same problem and then request that they also make a ticket out to Corel to help get this problem fixed in the first SP1.

HDR100410a003.JPG

HDR100410a001.JPG

Allthough the result will not be attractive , the procedure is all that is required.
