Hi Mike

Just compared render times between X10 and X8

Slide show at 11 minutes duration containing 110 images and similar amount of text clips, barn door transition used for all images, plus audio.
Smart Render used and same settings in preferences – performance.

Rendered same as Project, settings 1920 x 1080 x 25fps at 1680kbps. Frame Based

X10 took 13min 5 sec
X8 taking 13 min 12 sec

I do not think much has changed from X8 to X10

Just wondered why you chose the lower resolution of 720 x 480 to create your movie rather than the HD option of 1920 x 1080
notice I use Frame Based for slide shows

Hi, I chose the smaller output so I could get it rendered in a fair time, going 1080p seems to slow it down even more.
How weird then that yours appears to render at the same speed while mine is much slower.
I'll have a look at all the settings again later, but I have asked Corel for an answer on this as well

MikesMovies wrote:I have only made a slide show with some old photos with X10 but have found that it's output speed (where it makes the video file) seems really, really slow compared to X8.

To test whether X10 renders appreciably slower than X8, I conducted the following test:

Step 1 - Starting with a X10 VSP, X10 took 41 minutes to render a 1280x720 MTS file of 11'57" duration (1.47 GB (1,580,660,736 bytes)).

Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 1280x720 59.94fps [V: h264 high L4.0, yuv420p, 1280x720]
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz stereo 384kbps [A: ac3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 384 kb/s]

Step 2 - The X10 VSP was saved as an X8 VSP.

Step 3 - X8 took 45 minutes to render this saved X8 VSP as a 1280x720 MTS file of 11'57" duration (1.47 GB (1,580,783,616 bytes)).

Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 1280x720 59.94fps [V: h264 high L4.0, yuv420p, 1280x720]
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz stereo 384kbps [A: ac3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 384 kb/s]

Based on my testing, I don't see that X10 is slower at rendering than X8. However, any speed difference may be due to extraneous processes that are running on the computer during testing.

Hi

No other processes running at the time, I don't understand it but have asked Corel for support on the matter.
See what they come back with, clearly it is my installation that is at issue.

Hi Mike

I have given this some thought and the only conclusion is that some settings are different comparing X8 to X10.
I doubt your computers environment will be a problem as that will affect both programs.

If you run another test, set the Project Properties to your desired output settings
Then Share -- Same as Project Settings will ensure that at least the render properties are identical.

I am sure you have checked all settings in F6 – performance.

The last thing is the Smart Render, if that is ticked rendering the first time will take say 10 minutes, if you run the render again, (same program) straight after the first the render time will be reduced.
For each render you must reload the project to reset any effect Smart Render has on the second render.

For Slide Shows containing images you can deselect Smart Render as it will have little effect.
That may be the best option when testing the slide show render times.

HI

Just tried the following.
Created a simple test slide show in X8
Time to render was 1m 23s
I switch off Smart Render
I then had X10 import, changed only the title and ran it again with Smart Render switched off.
It took 1m 33s

Both test files can be had here if interested.

Ignore the sign up notes and just download the file.

Here is what Corel Tech support suggested.
It did not fix the issue and lost all my libs :(

Hello Mike,
Thank you for contacting Corel Technical Support.
I appreciate bringing your query to our attention. My name is Cho and I have been assigned to your ticket.
I see you're having product issues. I suggest resetting your application to its defaults.
1. On the keyboard, launch the Run box by pressing the Windows button then the letter R (Windows + R)
2. In the Open box, type %APPDATA% and press the enter key.
3. In the new window, find the Ulead Systems folder.
4. Open the Ulead Systems folder.
5. Open the Corel VideoStudio Pro and VideoStudio Pro (x64) folder.
6. There should be a folder named 20.0 here.
7. Rename 20.0 to 20.0_old.
Kind regards from Mike in Sussex UK

Hi Mike

One point regarding your video, why are you rendering to NTSC using 29.97 fps when you are in the uk which uses Pal at 25fps.
I am assuming your project properties are also Ntsc.

This should not change the render times, just interested why NTSC?

Hi Trevor

Yes the reason is that my camera only shoots in NTSC format and as I make films mainly for YouTube and never dvd I keep everything set the same.
Thanks for your help

Just had the following reply from Corel Support after they asked for Winaudit and MSinfo32:

Hello Mike,
Thank you for contacting Corel Technical Support.
The performance usually depends on the compatibility of the software on your computer's specs. Most likely the reason why X8 is faster is it can access your older graphics card better than X10 does not. Here in my end, X10 renders faster than X9 and X8 using the same file, likely because my system runs on a newer graphics card and processor. So, I can say that this is a case by case situation. In your case, X8 can render faster than X10.
We hope we were able to address and provide you the appropriate information you needed. Let me know if your query is now addressed.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions.

I am not sure I buy this, my graphics card is not that old and surely X10 should be able to access it?
I am also getting 'hangs' while using X10 so I think I'll go back and tell them this and say I am not overly happy with this outcome???
Kind regards from Mike in Sussex UK

Hi Mike

I have done more tests as I had some other issues with the rendered duration.
I created a project using X10 Instant Projects, rendering using X8 showed the video longer than using X10 (2 seconds), I did not understand why but did fix the anomaly.

But rendering using X10 is faster for me than X8, not a lot but it is there.
That is for all types I have tested, I deselect Smart Render so that did not have any effect
With and without acceleration settings etc.

X 10 is always faster.

I do not have a separate graphics board but using onboard graphics from Main board.
PC is relatively new 3 months ish

I did not realise X10 was giving other problems “hanging”

Regarding the graphics board, have you checked the web site for driver updates?
They may provide a program to scan your hardware to test for out of date drivers?

Hi again and thanks for sticking with me.

Yes updates were one of the firs things I did sadly no effect.

Corel have just written again and said:

Hello Mike,
Thank you for contacting Corel Technical Support.
This is more of an environmental issue, and graphics card is just one of the factors. If you can test the issue to another system that would be better.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions.
