Eventually I want to put them on a DVD just to save room on my hard drive. I have 3 of them and C and E have about 3 Gb left between them.

I still haven't really figured out the movie template thing yet nor have I been able to figure out how to cut my clips up so just the piece I want is a stand alone piece in the time line and what I trimmed gets saved separately.

One off thread question. Does VS have a cache? The one time that I was able to suscessfully create a stand alone clip I've lost the parts that I had cut it out of and now I need them but, I can't find it in any of my files. I tried using VS Help but nothing came up (the tape was taped over).

If you only have 3 GB left between drive C and E, it is a wonder you can do video work at all. It is high time to at least clean out the drives and/or get a new drive.

If you have a video and you remove sections out of that clip, the removed sections do not get saved anywhere. You of course should still have the original video which has not been modified. The "cut" parts are not saved but they are still part of the original file. What do you mean you "lost the parts that I had cut it out of". Did you delete the original source file?

For some reason I thought I read in the VSProX2 book that you can cut out a section of a clip and separate it from the clip and then save the other parts for later. I assumed it would be posssible in X4 also but, I couldn't find a mention of it which I now know why.

The strange part is that all the bordering parts I have but, the part I need is no where to be found. I guess now I will have to go through all my tapes to find the original recording. Big Fun!!

Did you delete the original video from your hard drive?

You can of course remove a section from a video and then export the remainder to a new file. Is that what you were really asking?

The original is gone from the drives so, I must have deleted it. It isn't something I would do, knowingly anyway.

No I wasn't really asking that. It was stuck in my mind that I could cut the section out and there were instructions on how to save the rest so I wouldn't lose them but, it doesn't really matter now since it's gone. I'll have to go through the tapes to offload it again.

Thank you for the help.

Hi Carroll

There seems to be some confusion here, or miss-understanding on my part.

When we add a video clip to the timeline we are adding a thumbnail a virtual clip.
Video Studio recognises the clip and knows its location on the hard drive.

If we move or delete or re-name the file on the hard drive video studio will lose the location and request a re-link, the clip in the timeline or library will show as Black and White.
---------------------------
When we cut the clip into two we see both halves, two clips
When we click on them we can see the bar below the preview screen indicating the section.
Ok so we delete one half, remove it from the timeline. Remember this is only a virtual clip
The original file on the hard drive is not changed.

Select the remaining clip, we can see the section below the preview screen representing part of the original.

Ok
If we wish we can create a new video file of the clip selected in the timeline.
Lets assume we have cut a clip and deleted part, select the remaining clip.
Go To File Save Trimmed Video will create a new video file of the section.
The new file will be saved to the working folder, a thumbnail will be placed in the library.

The clip in the timeline will not be changed it will remain linked to the original file.

It is not often that i find i need to use the Save Trimmed Video option

Thank you Trevor

The only one that was confused here was me now that I read your explanation. I have done that many times but, for some reason, this time I must have done something different. I have both ends but, they are just that: both ends. The original is not on my drives so I have to have deleted it.

The end parts are what I used first as they were from different videos at different times and dates.I've searched my drives for about 2 weeks looking for the middle part using both the search tools and manually but, it and the original are gone so, I have to go back to the tapes.

Thank you again Trevor for the help. I got focused on one thing and didn't think the process through regarding saving the trimmed clips.

What do you mean you have both ends? If the "ends" are from the same original clip and you can play those ends then your original clip is still on your system. The "ends" that you see just are "links" to the actual clip

I got 4 videos of trains that day at the same place. I have the video I took of a train in the AM. I have a video I took of another train 5 hrs later then another one 7 hrs later. What's missing is the video of the train I took between the AM one and the 5 and 7 hrs later ones.

I can click on them in Windows explorer and each plays in WMPlayer with no extra footage and in VSP the clips played in project mode fills the scrubber all the way across.

Hi Carroll

When you use Video Studio to capture DV-Avi the files have a date format similar to

uvs120609-001.avi,

That shows 9th 2012-June-9th

Your file names will be using a similar format.

Right click one of your clips in the timeline and select properties, take a note of the File Name
This indicates the files location on the hard drive and the name in date format.
Whilst the window is open choose "Locate on Computer", this will open the folder containing the actual files.
They will be named consecutively are there any missing.

From Video Studio, create a new library page, import the files to the new library so you can view their content.
Are you able to locate the lost file.

If not and you think you have deleted the file, view the computers Recycle Bin, there should be an icon on your desktop, there will be many files here, take care "do NOT restore ALL item"
look for a file having a similar name, select it, then "Restore this Item" (top right)

Hi Trevor

I have manually gone through every file on my hard drives plus, I empty my recycle bin once a week. I also searched the tapes and found that I filmed over that date after I off loaded it to my Hd. Unless there is some secret place on my PC that stores everything I delete that I can get at, the file is gone for good.

Thank you for your help in trying to save me from myself. I'll just move along on this one.
