(VS Pro5) Audio fade-in automatically applied after a split

I've edited with VideoStudio 7, 10, 11, X2, X3 and X4 and just switched to X5. An issue that I experienced (and resolved) early in my use of VS Pro X4 has now resurfaced with VS Pro X5 and I can't recall how I "fixed" the issue last time. I've searched this Forum and the VS Pro X5 User Guide for the solution with no luck.

My main video track is in its usual spot on the top row of the timeline (in Timeline View). Ripple editing is enabled. When I use the scissors to manually split the main track at any point, an audio fade-in is automatically applied to the trailing clip after the split. At the same time, the audio levels on both the leading and the trailing clip (before and after the split point) are instantly reset to 0 db. This is particularly maddening when I've carefully re-adjusted my main track's audio levels before applying the split.

The only setting I see that would seemingly cause an automatic audio fade-in is "Apply audio cross-fade automatically" under Preferences/Edit/Audio. However, that box is not checked.

"Apply audio cross-fade automatically" is not checked.

What am I missing?

I honestly don't know. I had not noticed such a phenomenon before, mainly because I usually cut a video to delete a part. But I just opened VS X5, selected a clip at random (which happened to be HDV), and inserted it in the timeline. I cut it in a couple of places. But the audio timeline remained in a straight line i.e. no automatic fade-in was applied. See photo.

And in my case, "Apply audio cross-fade automatically" *IS* checked -- though I am pretty sure that only applies anyway when two clips are overlapped either physically or with a transition. Yours do not appear to be so...

So unfortunately, I am unable to replicate your problem. Is there anything special about the video you are using? What is its format and properties?

(I forgot to mention that my version is VS Pro X5 15.0.0.258 and my OS is Windows 7 64-bit. I will add the VS version to my stats in my signature.)

The video I am editing was obtained from an DVD and I used the "Insert Media File To Library/Insert Digital Media" process to import it.

I experienced the exact same glitch at times when using VS Pro X4, but I assumed I had "fixed" it somehow when the glitch disappeared on its own.

Just like Ken I cannot replicate your problem. I am using X5

Just to be sure, I tried the same thing on another computer on which I have X5. But again I could not replicate the problem.

Both computers have X5 version 258, like you, but both run Win 7 32 bit. However, I can't really imagine yours being 64 bit would have anything to do with changing a specific setting in the program.

Sincere thanks, Ken and canuck for taking time to test for this glitch.

When I posted my problem to the Forum, I had expected my issue to be the direct result of an overlooked setting, so I didn't think to conduct my own experiment with a different clip.

A few minutes ago, I started fresh with a New Project and placed a different clip all by itself on the main Video Track row. When I split that clip with the scissors, there was no automatic audio fade-in. VS Pro X5 was performing exactly as it should.

However, I then added the "problem clip" to the main Video Track row immediately following the "good track". When I split the "problem clip" with the scissors, an unwanted audio fade-in occurred automatically as before. Thankfully, splitting the "good clip" still does not cause an automatic fade-in, even with the "problem clip" co-existing on the same track.

Clearly there is some quirk inherent in that clip that was imported from a DVD. As a workaround, I'll edit my complete project with no regard to those unwanted fade-ins and then take time to adjust the audio in one swell foop as a final step.

I suppose you could take the "problem" clip and export it to another video file, perhaps the same format and settings.

Really strange that avideo clip would have an effect as you describe.

Do you have VS X4 and X5 installed on the same computer? If the problem only happens when using X5, then the problem would be with VS X5. Like what canuck mention try converting the "problem" clip to another format and see if that helps. Another thing that you can do is to reinstall VS X5, you can do that by uninstall the program via CONTROL PANEL > PROGRAMS and remove the program from there before you reinstall it again using the disc or redownload it.
