Do I Need a new Graphics Card?

Postby rapscallion on Thu Apr 26, 2012 9:43 am

Hi all,

I am using VS Pro X4 and finding that no matter what video file size, when I apply mute, the playback on preview screen seems to bottleneck and become jagged. When I remove mute, it returns to normal.

I would have thought that - other than my GPU - the rest of the system has more than enough grunt to handle HD video. Video spec example is below.

PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(HDMV-PAL), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 16800 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 3/2(L,C,R,SL,SR)

From my very limited tech knowledge I can only assume the GPU is bottlnecking. I cannot recall the memory size but worst case scenario is 512MB and best case is 1GB GDDR3.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for considering...

If have the same results. I think because the GPU shows a perfect result when mute is off, it must be a bug in the program. The rendered file is OK, mute on or off. Also splitting audio and deleting the audio part is OK, also in preview mode.

Erdna,

Many thanks for taking the time to reply.

Does anyone else concur that this is a bug?

Also, wish to further clarify that the jitter reported above also extends to previewing the entire project (i.e even on clips that are not muted)

Cheers

Gang,

Would love to get your thoughts on above so that I can edit away not feeling like I am wadding through molasses.

Thanks in advance

When you have the problem, are you in Clip mode? Is playback good when in Project mode?

Kingston,

Many thanks for taking the time...

The problem manifests in both clip and project mode. The primary thing that seems to trigger it is selecting mute on a clip (not all clips in the project are muted).

Also noticed that colours are not as sharp and sound is softer (for those clips not muted) in project mode.

Thoughts?

Gang,

Above issue is still an issue - can anyone assist? i.e. would GPU replacement solve the issue?

Thanks for considering

FWIW, while I get some minor jerkiness when I mute an AVCHD clip and preview it in X5, it really is only minor -- and certainly better than what I used to get on my old Quad 6600 when previewing AVCHD, whether muted or unmuted. Motion is fairly smooth -- though certainly not as smooth as the unmuted video. It is certainly smooth enough to let me proceed with editing though I haven't tested it to see if the minor jerkiness is repeated in a rendered video using the muted clip.

My graphics card is as per my Profile.

EDIT: I have now rendered the muted clip using 'Same as first clip'. The new clip plays as smoothly as the unmuted original.

If you have the money then I don't see why is it stopping you from upgrading your GPU, since it will also improve on how your computer handles software that handles heavy graphics.

If you like make that this is not a software problem, here are some things that you can do.
- Make sure that your VS X4 is updated - http://www.corel.com/corel/pages/index. ... id=1100002
- Try VS X5, the trial is more than enough to tell you if the problem is with the software - http://pnoy.me/coreltrials
- If you have other video editing software other than VS X4, you can try importing the HD video and check if the same thing happens.
- Check if there are other software running in the background that's causing conflict with VS X4 and the problem that you are having.

From the reply of other users where it looks like they're not having the same issue when editing HD video, I myself cannot recreate your problem and my laptop is less powerful than the one that you are using.

Ken / Abiel,

Many thanks for taking the time to assist. I think I need to bite the bullet and simply wack a new GPU in - as U say Abiel - other related apps stand to benefit.

Now I need to determine what GPU given my current power supply is Antec TruePower 550W.
