Gallery output

Hi,
I'm wondering if the gallery output module is being developed ? As it is, it is very poor, does not generate good enough looking galleries (to my opinion), is not enough customizable, and has issues with character encoding like french accents. For someone who knows how to make html pages, is there a way to modify how the pages are generated ? can you point to some documentation ?
