NEX-7 Lens calibration issues

Postby ferdinand-paris on Wed Apr 18, 2012 12:44 pm

I'm proposing to try and calibrate some of my lenses for the NEX-7. The kit lens sure needs it!! Before I started I tried editing the profile_sony.txt file with dummy data to be sure that it would work. The NEX-7 is not listed, but the NEX-5N is so I carefully copied and edited the NEX-5 camera definition. The kit lens is already in there, but with no calibration data, so as a test I entered some dummy data from another lens of similar specs.

My initial problem is that ASP doesn't auto-detect the camera and lens, only that it's a Sony. Why is this? Is this a bug for the Monkey? Any other NEX owners around using ASP who can comment on this?

Here is the relevant section of the file Sony file with my edits and dummy data for the kit lens. The dummy lens calibration data works it I manually select the model and lens, but it doesn't autodetect:

I'm not a NEX owner, but a A65 owner - and had to add my camera to profile_sony.txt manually, too (just copied A77 entry)
My lens is already in genericSLR.txt. Manually selecting camera model and lens works.

But auto-detection doesn't work here either, only for exif_maker - so you didn't do anything wrong.

Not sure, but maybe this could be related somehow: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=46143. Seems this was a list of supported cameras and some settings or something.
Code: Select all
└» strings /opt/AfterShotPro/bin/AfterShotPro |grep -i sony|grep -i a77
sonya77.icc
sonya77_50.icc
SONYA77
SONYSLT-A77V
BSONY SLT-A77V Linear (AA77hVFAI00050.ARW, -0.05, ColorChecker SG)
SONY SLT-A77VSONY SLT-A77V
;SONY SLT-A77V Linear (AA77hVFAI00100.ARW, ColorChecker SG)
SONY SLT-A77VSONY SLT-A77V

Grepping for A65 returns a lot less. But this is just shooting in the dark... The real solution is to add proper support for the device in the next version I guess.

The NEX-7 is a supported camera for RAW conversion, so it's odd that it is not in the camera and lens database. I don't think the problem is the lens definition, at least not in the first instance. I assume that the logic is that it first detects the make, and then the model, and then the lens. With my changes above, ASP finds the make but not the model and so doesn't even get to the lens. So why won't it detect the NEX-7? I will try to find some time to feed the monkey.

if i remember right, Sony makes it really hard to get to the lens-IDs, which doesnt excuse the camera detection not to work.

from the few sony-files i have in my test-repo ASP could detect all the cameras. and only the lenses on the 3 images i have from a C3 would not be identified. but since i do not know what lens was used there (not my images), i cant even tell if the lens would be in the list.

anyway, definitely food for the monkey. supply sample files with exact description what *should* be detected.
use the Monkey to report bugs - include as much precise information as you can provide!

I have fed the Monkey. I guess we will have to wait until the next release to see whether it has been fixed. I will work on the calibrations when I am not travelling, which can still be applied manually.

I have seen posts on other forums about other s/w having difficulty auto-recognising Sony, so perhaps the fault is not entirely in ASP.

I need to calibrate my NEX lenses, esp the wide angle ones. The official instructions seem surprisingly complex to me, even though AFX says that is a snap with the right images. It occurred to me that Windows and OSX users could use PTGui (Note, not PTLens) to calculate the (a,b,c) parameters, if they already own it. There are instructions around about how to do this, e.g. http://www.erik-krause.de/index.htm?./v ... ort_en.htm . Has anyone used PTGui to calibrate a lens for ASP/B5?

Alternatively, PTLens has the parameters in its encrypted DB. I wonder whether if, having bought the program, Tom Niemann would agree to provide me with the parameters for a couple of my lenses. Has anyone asked? I have my doubts about this. I wouldn't mind paying the money, as it would save me time and work.
