Strange resize effect

Postby kevinc54 on Sat Mar 17, 2012 12:50 am

I'm getting some erratic results with PSPX4. I download my CR2 canon files to lightroom, process, export as Tiif or jpeg, then open in PSPX4. I then edit the pic resize to 800x600 jpeg, quality 3. The file is usually about 300-400 kb, a jpeg. I have a couple of files that are corrupted on resizing and are only 12.0 kb in size. I can't upload to my website, - the error message says they are corrupted. I'm not getting it with every file, but two in the last batch of ten files processed had this effect.

I tried restarting the program, same effect on those two files. I tried reprocessing in lightroom again , exporting as jpeg and tiff, same result. I can save the files out of PSPX4 as png format, no problem, no corruption.
My workflow is the same across a large number of files, - hundreds of em, normally no problem. Just can't figure out what would cause this erratic problem.
Any ideas??? I'm stumped.
thanks.
Kevin

Edit, I can open and save the problem files in gimp, which makes me think the problem is specific to PSPX4, but why does it not affect every file, only 20%??? Tried re installing PSPX4, no difference.
Below is one of the problem jpegs file straight from Lightroom, before I load it into PSPX4.

I resized and saved your photo with X4 as a JPG with compression of 3 and my file size is 312 KB. No corruption for me.
Using Paint Shop Pro versions 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 14

Thanks Lindasue, that tells me the problem is specific to my pspsx4, and the file from lightroom is ok. I have been using the same workflow for 5 months and the problem only showed in the last couple of days. I've made no changes to lightroom or PSPX4 recently. I tried to re install PSPx4, same result.

I copied your photo and saved it as a jpeg. Then loaded it into PSPx4. Just over 200k. I made a few changes and resaved it as a jpeg several times. No issues. It's now a 201k file.

Sorry I can't help any more.

@kevinc54

You may want to reset your PSP X4 or reinstall it. You can reset the program by pressing and holding down the SHIFT key then double-click on the PSP icon then when you received the message "DO YOU WAN TO RESTORE PAINTSHOP Pro TO ITS DEFAULT STATE?" just click OK.

Just in case, to guide you in reinstalling the program, you can follow the steps here.

Thanks, tried that, no change. I can save the file as a .png but not jpeg. The problem affects both tiff and jpegs out of Lightroom. The picture I posted above is a jpg out of lightroom. Others have said that file works fine on their machines. I can save the file in Gimp but not Corel PSPX4, - a simple open the file and save the file as jpeg with no editing results in corruption. Not every file is affected, only 20%.

Hi Kevinc54,
You have a number of things that could be causing problems. Your camera, Lightroom and PSPX4. Not to mention your hard drive where you are saving images might be experiencing some corruption , or your camera cards.

You will need to do a series of steps and repeat to isolate what is causing the problem.
1. Eliminate lightroom - set your camera to produce high quality jpgs. Take say 20 images of your backyard (20% error should give you 4 problems in this batch).
2. Load those images into a test folder on your desktop and then load into PSPX4 and without doing any editing, resize and save (preferabley to a second folder)
3. Load the same image into X4 and do some editing, then resize and save again . Check to see if any errors occur here. If you get some errors you might try a different storage card and see if they persist. A card that is on its way out can cause random corruptions.

Canon cameras come with a CD with Canon Digital Photo Professional on it. You can process some CR2 files there to save as Jpgs or Tiffs and then run them through X4.

If you have now ascertained that your cards are not causing problems , X4 no problems then it may be that Lightroom needs a reinstall.
In any case by isolating each step in your procedure and replacing with an alternative you should be able to work out where the corruption is occurring.

Just for the record I am having almost the exact same problem. When I send the file over to Lightroom edit it and then back to Pro X4 it will save the file but if I then resize it the file becomes corrupt and cannot be used. It also will not delete and says the file is in use by Pro x4. It does not happen to all the files but at least 50 % of the files. My computer is less than 4 months old, the camera (Canon 60d) is less than four months old and I have 3 different sd cards so I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. Looks to me like it might be a bug but maybe someone has an idea. HELP!

Hi Kevin, As I mentioned in my last post it looks like I am having the same problems. I did go back and try something that worked on my last file. The last file that I moved to Pro x4 from LR would not resize. I went back and started looking around. It looks like I did not click 'done" after editing the file in LR. So I took the next photo edited it and clicked done and was able to move it over to Pro x4 and resize it then downloaded it to the internet with no problems. Not sure if this is the problem but worked this time. I will be working with more files in the coming weeks and will keep you updated.
