Saving Corrupt Jpeg Files

Programme: X4
System: Windows 7 Ultimute 64bit

Installed 01/01/2012 with SP1.

Problem: When I save jpeg files some of them become corrupt and will not open.

I have been using PSP for a number of years and decided to upgrade to X4, now a number of the files that I save in PSP are becoming corrupted and they seem to all be photos which are shot using a pure white background, not all photos are affected, I never had this problem in my previous versions of PSP

I use adobe lightroom which I transfer my raw file into jpeg, this is where i then open the jpeg in X4 and do my main editing, it is when I save the image it saves corrupted and can not be opened or deleted (shows that X4 is still usingthe file) . it will also not allow me to re transfer the image from my cataloge.

has anyone had the same issue, it is really frustrating as there are some good features and I am considering unistalling and reverting back to my older programme (X2)

any help will be great.

This may be an issue with the metadata of the image, I exported 2 sets of 50 identical images 50 with and 50 without the Metadata and ran a script which then automatically save the image, about 20 of the images with the metadata ended up corrupted, all the images without the metadata saved fine.

I use the metadat to file my images so need it and will be ashame that becasue of this issue I could not use this great programme

Before saying the file as jpeg, I would suggest that you save them first as .PSPImage file the native file format of PSP. This was you'll have a backup of the project that you made.

Can you provide some sample files, so that we can at least test them on our computer? You can either upload them video mediafire.com or any file sharing site.

It is inpractical to download and image in jpeg, then open it up in PSP to edit it and convert it to a psp file then reopen it to then resave it as Jpeg. when editing 100's of photos at a time it would take far to long,

I cant understand why this would happen, it worked fine in X2 & X3 but not in X4, unless the metadata is removed when editing in 4

Downloaded both files. I can view them both fine. I opened them both in PSP ok, and then resaved them as jpegs with different filenames. The file that has the exif data will not save properly as a JPEG (it saves but is 8kb, and is not viewable). The file without the exif data saves ok as a JPEG. I then tried saving the file with exif as a pspimage. Then I opened that file up and resaved as a jpeg...still does not save properly. I can save that file as a tif, but for some reason it won't work as a jpeg.

Very strange. Must be something in the extra data that is messing up the save.

Best not to hope Corel employees see this. They probably will, Abiel makes an appearance every now and again and Simone is pretty good about being vigilant. But it's always best to be pro-active.

Since it's been verified there are three options for reporting it as a bug.

1) Call Corel directly and have them verify the bug. The call costs you nothing. (And email will *** the life out of you as you try to get past their automated responses and get someone t actually listen...allow 2 to three weeks for reply)

2) The Bug and Fixes topic on this board is a great place to define verified bugs. Simone from Corel does go there to verify bugs and report them when she can or let us know if it's already been reported.

That link provides a survey in which you can report bugs, and share your thoughts about PSPX4. Though currently has little to no feedback so it kind of just goes out and we hope things are done about it.

I am now in contact with Corel, but all they have said is to Reset the Program (Shift+F8) when that did nothing they suggested a reinstall, again it didnt correct anything,

After downloading the two sample files and perusing both in Wordpad, both files then opened OK in PSP4 SP1. I did not try to save either file to see if my computer will further corrupt them. Others have successfully done that.

But I do have a question as to whether the suspected problems are a result of "Exif II metadata" or "Adobe XMP metadata", which looked somewhat incomplete to my eyes in the one file in which it seemed to be present?

Note: My eyes have not looked into any metadata comparisons, including that in Adobe XMP format in a long, long time, and I have no experience with Lightroom, or its modifications. In fact, the last time I got really interested was at the time I purchased Ulead PhotoImpact X3 with bundled Corel Multimedia One for my Vista Home Premium equipped laptop nearly three years ago.

Edit: Hmm. come to think of it does PSPX4 have the capability of either creating Adobe XMP files OR leaving them alone?

Yep, PSPX4 does not like raw files converted to jpegs by Adobe lightroom. I have this issue all the time but not every time just some of the jpegs, I just never know when it will do it. and once that happens the file is toast. I have resorted back to using X2 for most of my work and X4 for tiffs and round trips from LR for the Nik filters. If Corel can fix this bug then X4 will replace X2 on my computer. My other issue which I can live with is the 4 minutes it takes to boot up. It does not do this on my older machines just the newer 64bit Vista machine. I have spent a lot of time trying to resolve these issues on forums and thru Corel. Otherwise PSPX4 potienially is the best version yet IMO.

I experienced this exact same problem last week. All files exported using Lightroom, from cr2 to jpg would edit in psp, but saved as a corrupt 8Mb file.
Strange thing is that I cannot reproduce it now.
The only thing I can think that has changed on my system since then is I downloaded an eval copy of Elements 10.
I wonder if this somehow fixed an underlying issue with Lightroom 4?
I have since removed the Elements 10 eval, but still cannot reproduce the fault.

Might be worth you guys trying the same thing to see if this magically fixes the problem.
I could be way off beam - but you never know.

The latest Corel X4 update changed the charator of the jpeg save. It now gives me an error notification which is far better because the file is still good and I can choose to save it as a Tiff. At least I don't lose the work I had put into it like I did before. There is still an issue though.

The Change to taget brush still does not work right either, it always puts way too much color no matter what the settings. X2 is fine. Reset and reinstall has done nothing. I guess very few people use the change to target tool.

I find it interesting that many people have a problem and then like to blame it on PSP X 4 / Corel.
It has been mentioned before that Jpgs / Tiffs from Lightroom cause problems in PSPX4. The same people in some cases mention that they converted a CR2 file (Canon) in Lightroom.

Canon also produces there own raw converter in Digital Photo Professional (DPP) which comes on a CD with the camera purchase. The only problem I found was that if I had DPP embed the ICC profile then PSPX4 would bring up a message for each image to say was converting the colour profile. I just unticked this option in DPP and no further problems.

If these same people used DPP to convert a file they would find it loads and saves correctly in PSPX4 .
Thus the finger points back to Lightroom and Adobe changing the specifications to make some incompatibilities with other programs. The problem is with Lightroom NOT with PSP X4. It is a bit like the difference between a screw and bayonet light bulb. They both provide light but need different fittings (programs) to work them.
If you rely upon Lightroom then stay with photoshop and elements.

Note: Corel have added a new Aftershot Pro to do much the same as Lightroom. I have not heard of any problems with PSPX4 having the same problems with TIffs or Jpgs. And Aftershot Pro is more economical than Lightroom.

I disagree since PSPX2 works fine with the LR files. LR3 did the same thing with PSPX4 so it seems its a PSPX4 issue to me. Since LR is such a popular software and PSPX4 seems to have an issue with it why shouldn't corel make an update to fix it. Corel did something with the latest update as it reacts differently with the files. We shouldn't be expected to switch software platforms because of this (I have no intention of giving up LR). Anyway if you have PSPX2 or 3 you can work around it for now. I would happly change to PS CS5 -6 if it wasn't for the fact I much prefer PSP and always have since the late 90s. I just want PSPX4 to work for me.

X5 solves this issue, but now tends to crash when merging the last two layers. Save befor merging and its fine.
