Re: X4 always says the jpeg is at 72 dpi

I've got the same problem I believe. When I open a jpg it opens it at 72 ppi. The EXIF info clearly states 300 dpi but it opens it at 72. Is there a fix for this? I have looked for a setting within preferences but can't find where to change this.

Service Pack 1 has fixed this issue for some, have you updated PSPX4?

Service Pack has not fixed this for me.

It hasn't fixed it for me, either. In fact, it seems there may be some new behavior in its interaction between dpi and picture dimensions, but I haven't had much time to experiment. I have only done a quick comparison between X3 and X4 in this regard.

The problem still occurs for me as well, even after installing SP1.

I have had a little more time to play with this, and it looks as though the behavior is the same as it was in X4 prior to SP1.

For example, one of my tests was with a photo I had cropped to 6" x 4" at 300 dpi, using PSP X4 (prior to SP1). I verified in Windows Explorer and other non-PSP applications that this photo is still 6" x 4" at 300 dpi. Opening this photo in PSP X4 (after SP1) shows it to be 25" x 16.667" at 72 dpi. Doing the math shows I haven't really lost anything, from a total pixels perspective, but anything that relies on the dpi setting will be incorrect. Opening this same photo in PSP X3 and earlier (back to PSP 8 ) works correctly.

seems X4 checks "JFIF" for DPI value. My test is, if jpeg has a "JFIF" header, then dpi shows correct, or it is not.....

39_Steps wrote:. . . .I just bought and installed PSP X4 yesterday (Nov 2011) without a trial, so I'm trying to get used to black on black (never happen) while reading the posts on this forum.

The "72 dpi" issue came up on the PhotoImpact forum around the time of the release of PI X3, IIRC. I delved into it because numbers interest me more than pictures. Seems like Adobe didn't necessarily get the dpi right in its metadata (whatever right is when refering to dpi), but PhotoImpact might just erase the metadata containing dpi if you weren't careful.

PSP X4 users with dpi concerns might want to search the PhotoImpact forum on the subject, circa 2008.

Here is a link to the 2008 PhotImpact thread that I remembered.
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=31131&start=15

Ulead PhotoImpact is now history, but so is the old IPTC (non Adobe XMP) header format for metadata still being used by Corel in Paint Shop Pro X4. However, Corel is unlikely to soon make any changes in its method of appending and prepending metadata, so the subject is moot. I have not delved into whether Corel PSP X4 modifies, copies and reorders, or perhaps deletes original camera maker jpg/jfif Exif data, includding ppi/dpi fields upon resave as PhotoImpact did. (I did not use an alias on the PhotoImpact forum in 2008.)

This is interesting: after opening what Windows XP calls a 300 dpi JPG in X4, the image information say it is 120 pixels per inch and the exif says 300 dpi. This s a digital image created with Photoshop.

I was refered to this forum via the TalkGraphic forum

I agree with yukoner2 just too much hasle to do the math - the application is esentialy usless - kind of reminds me of my experience with True Image 2009 Home - great application BUT... I have a Cruzer Ti flash drive that is encrypted - the autoload must load like a 'mini' OS so that I can login - with TI 2009 installed the flash drive would not 'boot' - once removed from sys flash drive OK

the issue is not just an incorect report of dpi in image information but is actualy resizing the image to 72 dpi whether or not you want to do so -
I know this because I have both PSP X2 and PSP X4 installed on my system (Win XP Home SP 3 2.5 GB ram 3 GHz Pentium 4) if you were to save an image suposedly as is without editing and then load the same image in PSP X2 - X2 will report the new dpi setting IE:image has been re-sized - the exif info is OK and reports as was taken in camera as 300 dpi

here are sscreen shots of X2 and X4 - image information of the same file

Image

Image

as you can see PSP X4 is maintaining the pixel size of 3648X2736 px but has downsized the dpi resulting in a huge inch size - PSP X2 reports the image file as is from the camera (10 MP Nikon Coolpix s560) - and as noted this not just an incorect reporting by X4 but is actualy automaticaly re-sizing the image without selecting resize when saved

other than the above PSP X4 is great

The inch size is calculated, not reported. That's how some products report in cm or mm. So it is not resizing. It is reporting and saving the incorrect dpi(ppi) value. This is an annoyance but it doesn't change the actual image itself and most printers or printing applications let you set the dpi(ppi) of the image you're printing and don't restrict you to what PSP says it should be so it doesn't harm anything. It's an annoyance that needs to be fixed, yes, but not much beyond that.

SP1 has fixed this for me. Maybe SP2 (if there is an SP2) can fix this for everyone else as well?
