No CPU usage on render?

Postby mleejr on Thu Feb 24, 2011 4:18 pm

I don't know if I changed a setting or what, but now, when it renders, the CPU is rather idle?! Yet the render speeds are not bad! What?!
I bought the product because it said it had GPU rendering. That is great, but I want both!
Also, is there a way to see GPU usage like task manager CPU rendering? I would like to maximize utilization to minimize my rendering time.
I have an NVidia 460 786MB GPU.
Thanks,
Michael Lee

I dunno... My programming knowledge & skills are not that advanced.... But the CPU & GPU run a different machine-language, so it's probably "difficult" to have both processors working on the same task at the same time.
Head over heels,
No time to think.

Hello mleejr,

Since you are using Nvidia, you can try NVIDIA PerfHUD 6 from this site: http://developer.nvidia.com/object/nvperfhud_home.html

Actually I'm a multi-threaded developer so many of the more modern tools have made it much easier. My CPU definitely shouldn't be idle, that is for sure. I would see my GPU idle before my CPU. My CPU used to be pegged when using VideoStudio rendering (or is it my imagination).

Is it pretty much CPU OR GPU (GPU is video card) rendering? Can I not have both?
Thank you everyone for your help.

Update! I rendered one video using AVI (project settings) and just did one using WMV (both 1280x720) and the WMV has the CPU pegged!? The avi does not! On the WMV, I wonder if the GPU is being taxed....I will check using the nvideo perf tool.
