I started out with VS, upgraded to MSP, then Quartet and eventually other partner add-ons such as Boris Graffitti. However, at the heart of my system is MSP and Workshop. MSP enables you to do a wide range of video editing tasks that are not possible to do in VS. While the addition of Chroma-Key and other features are nice add-ons to VS. It remains an entry level product.
If all you're going to do is simple to average point, shoot, capture, trim, label, publish work --VS is the product for you and worth the price.

I have several entry products Visual Studio, Pinnacle Studio, etc. that came with my DVD burners or I upgraded to from them. PS Studio has superior transistions (Hollywood FXs are great

), however, the chroma-key and normal workflow results are less than stelllar VS has it hands down there.
However, none of the the entry products has the editing and workflow capablities of MSP. If you're not statisfied with the titling cabilities of MSP or those of CG, etc... I would upgrade to Quartet and look into 3D Production Studio.

If you still want more titling power and flexibility --I did-- I would add on Boris Graffitti. Graffitti its about as pricy as buying MSP, but you're now at a completely different level of Multimedia work in titling. [Graffitti for titling is like the difference in flexiblity between VS and MSP in Video Editing --just a whole other level of capability

]
I am in the process of developing a series of for internal use only educational DVDs for a large corporation. The features I needed far exceeded VS, the other entry products, and at times some of the prosumer and professional product suites.

This has resulted --like Hollywood Studios-- in purchasing what appear to be duplicate or overlaping products to get the job done

: Serious Magic Ultra for Virtual Set Chroma-Key, Boris Graffitti for titling, and Pinnacle Hollywood FX for transistions, But at the end of the day all the other materials I create using these other tools end up on my MSP timeline for editing and final mastering in DVD Workshop.
My advice for what its worth, explore the capbilities and limitations of the products your using now. It maybe you can accomplish what you want in MSP or Quartet --just in another way. If not or the workflow is just too much explore augmenting your toolsuite with 3rd party [I found Smartsuite and Boris on the Ulead partners website and was happy that they worked so well together as well as had tech support as helpful and responsive as Uleads

--not the case with a lot of other vendors

]
In some cases for me the decision was time verse $$$,

I could create a StarWars like title roll using MSP or 3D Studio. However, the time involved for each of many rolls pushed me to invest in Graffitti. It cut development time by an order of magnitude and rendered nicely inside MSP

. However, for most of my simple to average titling needs are still accomplished via Quartet and my integration and editing of all the components are done in MSP.
Hope this helps your decision making process
