hannes_hab wrote:(sort)/filter can be done in file system mode too:

- go to a raw file you have not edited yet
- set the green "picked" flag
- settings -> save as raw (or camera) - default

thats it - all your new downloaded raw files from CF/SD card have the green flag - the jpgs don have it
you can do ctrl R - to apply the default settings to older images ...

It is a nice workaround, but, it did not move our feature request into useless area, because this workaround blocks natural usage of flags (Pick/Reject). We need these flags for what they were made for.

That's another great solution. I was not sure whether the raw defaults get applied during download or only during import.

Download does not apply anything.
Import and viewing them the first time in the file browser will do it.

I agree that we nevertheless need some native support in ASP for this situation.
But if you don't like to use the 'picked' flag you could instead use one of the color lables.

So one needs to import the images into a catalog anyway?

But if you export those Raws as Jpeg or Tiff into the same folder, as I do usually, the Jpegs will get that same flag to.

You can create a preset that deselects the flag. And then apply this preset in the output batch queue.

ah, those were days when RAW+JPG were treated as one..

after initial rename i just dump the JPGs into a subfolder..
if i let the camera create them, that is.
output is kept separate from the RAWs, anyway.
use the Monkey to report bugs - include as much precise information as you can provide!

Thanks for the useful hint, Fraenzken. I didn´t thought on that part.

Great tip, thanks!

After afx's hint I am not sure if this is working as expected!

I think afx meant "viewing them the first time" applies the settings - not downloading ...
You can see the green flag when going to the place where your images are.
No need to import to the catalog.

Try by yourself ...

and - shure - its only a workaround -

I did a quick test with existing images. I set a blue label to a jpg and saved this as the rendering default. Browsing other folders with jpgs did NOT show the blue label. Only after CTRL+R (Apply default settings) the label shows up.

and as you said:only a workaround

What I am interessted in is: what would be your prefered feature to support your workflow?
Staking the RAW and jpg? Would this be enough?

When I shoot RAW and JPG I do this only because sometimes the jpg generated from the camera is a perfect reference that I hardly achieve. Otherwise I would only shoot RAW.
So my workflow needs a step where I have to decide whether the developed RAW or the JPG is the one to keep.

i never mix output from RAW and JPG if it can be avoided.
the look, rendering, sharpening, structure and so on of the image just wont match unless you use software made by the camera manufacturer. and not even that is a guarantee. since i currently use cameras from three companies that is out of the question. also i have yet to see an JPG out of a camera that i am really pleased with. i use JPGs, yes, but i dont like them.

i shoot JPG exclusively for workflow reasons - quick deliveries on sight where there is no time to adjust and render from RAW is my most common usage. a colleague who does 360° panos has to shoot so many images to get the 360° with full dynamic range that he very often shoots jpgs because HDR is maxing the dynamic range anyway and he can fit more locations on a card while shooting.

PS: the Ctrl-R behaviour is by design - otherwise changing your defaults would mess up any image you look at. even those that were done before the new defaults.

Before I got AfterShot Pro, I shot in RAW+JPG because my Canon JPG Images (with Picture Styles applied) very often don't need much further editing and so there was no purpose in using Canon's DPP for RAW Conversion.
Now with AfterShot Pro of course the RAW Conversion is much easier but I still have to apply more editing to improve the Sharpness and Lighting, so it is often easier still to start with the JPG.
When I want to adjust Exposure, Highlights, Shadows, Noise etc., I still start with the RAW Image.
