PSP 2018 Ultimate will not Save As .jpg

Postby Dr Planarian » Sat Nov 18, 2017 7:48 pm

I am having trouble with my PSP 2018 Ultimate (v. 20.1.0.15) saving files as anything other than .gif or .pspimage. When I try to save as any other format (well, I have not tried them all, but I have tried several, most relevantly .jpg, with the same result), the program closes without saving at all.

Any suggestions? I have plenty of hard drive space.

Your version of PSP2018 has the first - and buggy - Update 1. This has since been replaced by a new Update 1, which will change the version number to 20.2.0.1. You can download the update at this link and install it manually:

https://www.paintshoppro.com/en/support/updates/

In Corel's usual non-intuitive manner of thinking, they named the revised Update 1 the same as the buggy Update 1, instead of something like Update1A which might have given users some clue that it was superseding the original Update 1. Their description that goes along with this update also fails to let users know that they should upgrade to this new update if their PSP version is not 20.2.0.1. Sloppy work at best IMHO.

Alas, this update has not solved my problem. The first time I tried to save as a .jpg, it did save the file but in a file type .dib (?). I then closed PSP, opened the .dib file by dragging and dropping it onto my PSP icon, tried to save it as .jpg, and the application instantly crashed just as it had done before.

You can try doing a reset to default. The instructions reference X6 but they apply to all versions.

If that doesn't work you could contact Corel directly.

Hope that helps.

Further to what Kathy_9 said, if resetting to default doesn't work another option is to completely uninstall PSP, making sure to use the Cleanup tool available in a sticky near the top of this forum, then reinstall and - prior to opening PSP after installation - immediately apply the proper update obtained from the link I provided. Then, if that doesn't work, you should contact Corel. Their tech support isn't known to be all that knowledgeable but the alternative is to simply let them know you want a link to the installation files that will install an already properly updated version of the software.

OK, I tried the reset, and it didn't work. I then tried removal with the cleanup tool and reinstallation from a new distribution, and it did work (and, as an extra-added bonus, was already updated to 20.2.0.1).

Furthermore, all the add-ons installed as part of the PSP 2018 Ultimate package were still intact and did not need to be reinstalled.

Thank you all for your help. I've been using this program since they released version 1.0 back in the Pleistocene when we were all still using IBM XTs connected via parallel cables to dot-matrix printers, and I am lost without it.

Glad everything's working fine now. The procedure you followed was certainly much faster than waiting for anything from tech support. :-)
